CV Joint: to go thru dealer or outside service?
CV Joint: to go thru dealer or outside service?
My front left CV Joint boot needs to be replaced ASAP... It was noted recently at a dealership checkup. They said the joint was still alright and wanted to charge about $212 to clean it out/repack w/ grease and put a new boot in. However, for a little less I could go to pepboys and even have a reman cv joint/shaft put it with a lifetime warranty. I read some treads regarding different make of boots splitting soon after they were fixed. Also, the dealer's service agent also mentions that the remaned units tend to fail quite often or cause other problems. Should I just have the new boot put on and repacked w/ grease at the dealer or opt for a replacement of the joint as well thru a place like pepboys or a local shop?
thanks in advance

Hm...if the boot has already ripped, and you've been driving the car, you might as well go and get a remanufactured CV joint. Not sure if you're mechanically inclined or not, but if it were my case, i'd do the replacement myself, and save the labor $$. Its all if you have the time or can do it. Good luck
Cheers.

I second that. You done know how long you ride the car with the boot ruptured. So you dont know what the damage is inside the CV joints. Might as well replace them. Previous posts claimed they cost app 75 to 100 $ each.
