Chimes on '99 SE

I'm the new owner of a sweet '99 SE-L, have a small problem I'm trying to resolve: none of the chimes work and I'd like to fix. Went to a dealership who said their guy checked out the "obvious" possibilities, like fuses I guess, but wanted another 2 hours labor to track down the cause. I bolted after that. Hoping this can't be too difficult to solve -- anyone have any ideas? The warning lights, alarm, etc., all work. I figured the first owner had the chimes disconnected somehow... Thanks!

as another owner of an SE-L, i can say that for the year and a half that i've owned my car, there has never been a chime, ( door open, lights on, etc.) there might be one for the seatbelts, i can't remember. I've checked the "obvious" possibilities as well, and like you, have come up with nothing, with the exception of 2 possible soloutions:

1. there never was one in the first place.
or
2. It's one of those small things that, although you would like them to work, just won't. And, it'll be more of a PITA to fix/solve the problem than to just deal with it.

It's like the gas light: Is there one there? At what point does it come on? has the bulb burned out? Why is it that i just can't walk into a nissan dealership and explain the bulb that i need and have them tell me they know what i'm talking about? Why do they always insist that i have to rip apart the gauge cluster, pull the old bulb, put the cluster back together and drive down there, then show them the bulb and have to have them order it, then when the bulb finally comes in, rip apart the guage cluster again just to fix it?

It's just easier to deal with it than to drive yourself crazy trying to fix it.

re: Chimes

The warning chimes...like when leaving the car with the lights on (that's the one I'm most concerned with), seatbelt not fastened, etc. Maybe too much of a PITA like you say but if it was just an unplugged module, heck I'd fix it...

re: Chimes, etc.

oh yeah, the low gas light -- I bet it works but you need to get pretty damn low, like a gallon or two before it comes on. My previous '85 Accord (may she rest in peace, 170K miles) did that...looked way MT but still had some left...

That beeping thingy you want is so friggin annoying I'd rather disconnect it if I can find the damn thing. Beeps when you leave the lights on after the car is off, open the driver's door while the car is running, or if you don't fasten your seatbelt and start the car.

The chime box is located on the lower pannel under the steering wheel. Two screws will take that piece down. The chime box is attached to the back of that pannel. There is a 2 wire plug that goes into it.

Perhaps it's just unplugged....

1a.'ve gone to the point where i coasted to a gas station and put 18 gallons of gas in the car.......I've come to the conclusion that the gas light is burnt out.
1b. When i'm at 1/4 of a tank the car stutters in the higher RPM range, and when i get just under 1/4, she sputters on the slightest of inclines. If the gas light won't come on till 1/8 of a tank or less, then screw it. I try as hard as possible not to have less than 1/2 a tank in the car at all times anyway.

2. I agree, if something was just unplugged, or had a blown fuse, then sure, it would be easy as hell to just have it working again. But, if you've gone through the steps to checking to see if it's something simple and it still doesen't work, then just leave it alone, don't waste anymore time on it.

Thank you, just what I needed to know -- I'll investigate!

And I agree, if I can't fix it easily, I'll get over it I'm sure!
