Anyone have any idea how much a good repair shop will charge to replace a CV joint on my '96 Maxima?

Just curious so I don't get ripped off. I'm estimating about $600-800 with labor and all, but I really have no idea.

That's funny. You can get the whole axle for $55 from autozone. If you are not technicaly incompitant you can get one of these guys that live somewhere around you to replace it for you for $200 and they will be glad.

 

Usually $150-$200 to replace a drive axle. Around the same for a cv joint. There are 2 cv joints on one axle so it is better to replace the axle instead of just the joint.

 

In Houston, TX, you can have the whole CV joint axle replaced for $100 each.

 

Get the axle from autzone for $55 and get over it

 

labor at nissan is $130, but just about any mechanic is capable of replacing an axle without destroying anything. It's easy to do with a lift, and it really only takes 15 mins if you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, most shops charge 1 hour minimum, so you kinda get smacked on labor. Be careful of the cheap axles. I bought one from napa for $150 including core charge and it may be defective. I'm getting it checked out at Nissan on Saturday to see if that is definately still a problem, or if there is a deeper rooted issue that is making a metal on metal rubbing sound when I turn to the right, and is causing a really nasty vibration from the LH front wheel. Cars...love em and hate em all at the same time.

 

55$ for axle at autozne and for me it was less then 50$ for labor at firestone.

 

Yeah, never go to the dealer, because that what their price looks like, they try and rim job 'ya everytime.

Just wanted to say, I found this forum very helpful. I am having the aforementioned rubbing/grinding sound when I turn to the right. I am going to try replacing the cv joint and I will reply when I get it done.

 

A lot of people automatically assume noise when they are turning is from a bad axle. It could also be the strut insulator. That gives more of a squealing noise though

 

It's very likely the Left wheel bearing. Can't tell without being there. Bad CV joint makes a clicking/knocking sound while driving through a turn.
