First gear/reverse died (automatic tranny)

Sadly, this is going to be my first post here =\
I bought a '97 GLE 2 months ago and around a few weeks back my CEL turned on. I did the diagnosis and turned out to be a problem with the Shift Solenoid Valve (A); I also started noticing that the car would take long to shift to 2nd gear (around 3-4.5k RPMs). Tonight, I went to put the car in reverse, and nothing would happen, it would just stay still. "D" works, so does "2", but 1st and reverse do not work at all.
I was waiting for winter break to come so I could take it to a mechanic so they could check out the solenoid thing, but it looks that I'm gonna have to get a new tranny =(
Any inputs on this? can it be that the tranny is completely screwed up, or is it something fixable? and If it is screwed, I might just as well do a manual transmission swap, how hard is it to get the parts?

thanks guys.

Slipping tranny. You can get it rebuilt but I see many people around here with rebuilt trannies and many have their trannys fu{k up right after the rebuild. I think it would cost you about the same amount of money two get a 5 spd swap. Oh yeah I don't know if it will work but you could try to change the tranny fluid.

I'm taking it to a mechanic on monday morning to see what they tell me. Thinking about it now, maybe just changing the solenoids can fix the problem?
Hopefully I don't come across any head-in parking (so I won't have to back up)
btw, car has 118k miles.

Oh man! there's maxima meetings down here in miami? !!!! I didn't know. I had a VW before and I used to go the meetings at Tropical Park, but they sucked.. bunch of ******.

I'm around the Dolphin Mall area, but I'm moving in a couple days around Braddock High School.

BTW, where do you hold your meetings?

Does anyone know of a good transmission or a Nissan-specialized place I could take the car to?

I drove my first car (82 Ford Fairmont) around with out reverse for about a year. It is the worst thing to deal with. Needless to say, by the time I got rid of that thing I had some disproportionate legs (those fairmonts are heavy).

The problem was that it had a broken low and reverse band in the tranny. It would have cost more to fix that I bought the car for, so I just dealt with it till I got my D21.

Good luck with your tranny problems.

The shift solenoid is about a 120 dollar part that you can replace yourself if you can do basic wrenching. It involves dropping the auto tranny pan and removing the valve body. Solenoid replacement is covered in the VB Mod instructions. You want to make sure you get a tranny gasket if you attempt it. I'm not sure if the solenoid will make a difference though. But at least you know whats up if you do wanna replace it.
