Do you hear any clicking or popping noises while turning the steering wheel lock to lock? Is the ride harsh or otherwise uncontrolled when you hit a speed bum? Are these original struts up front?

I have a noise very similar to what you are describing, but mine is worse if I hit a speed bumb when turning. I got under the car and my stock y-pipe flex section is rusted very badly and I'm almost 100% sure that is what's causing it. My budget Y should be here today so I'll see if the stocy rusted Y is really the culprit.

Sounds almost like a creek I had/have at times (especially when it's cold outside). So what was my problem? Front swaybar bushings. I replaced all my front end bushings with ES poly ones and did not properly grease the sway bar to frame bushings. They creeked like a **** till I took um out anf regreased um good. Now they creak cause the POS's split on me so I'm going back to stock for those. Dunno if this could be your problem but try greasing up your front swaybar to frame bushings and see where that gets ya.

Could just be your springs. I did not replace the coil sleve or use any coil wrap when I installed my Eibachs and I get creaking when it's cold out.

Yeah i dont have a sway bar and it does sound like a creaking coming from some where in that area were the bushings are....

It doesnt snap crackle or pop....just a creaking noise kinda like a rusty matress, but louder and kinda coming from the struts...i dunno, they are stock including the springs so they might need to be replaced as well.....

Yeah, that's what mine sounds like. You do have a front swaybar tho (all of our cars have one), that's the one I was talking about.

One possibility could be struts. You can also use silicone spray-lube to diagnose your problem. Start by spraying it on the struts first, drive it over some speed bumps, if the sound still persists, then spray the spring seats(where they touch each other on the top and bottom), get the lube worked in, spray different busing sets/joints till you eliminate the sound. You're only out the cost of the lube + your time.

would this just be a temp. fix or the kind of maintenance that actually fixes the problem?

i know my whole car is creaking through turns and over bumps so i'm guessing its the shocks/struts/springs. i was thinking of getting them replaced but this seems like a better idea. any thoughts?

its definitely bushings for sway bars they get dried out n cracked.
the sway bar connects right on the control arm behind the ball joint.

I disagree with the sway bar bushings. Check the insulator wrap around your spring. The crap dries out or cracks and the metal to metal contact causes this noise in a lot of cars.
Replacement is pretty straightforward. A plastic helix wrap from Radioshack works fine.

I have a quick question for you. I work at Radioshack and I do not know what you mean by "plastic helix wrap" The only things I can think you could be referring too is split loom or spiral wrap. Do you know the exact name or even a Cat.#

wow i totally stand corrected. I have seen lots of bushings that weather crack and make a very similar noise but only when turning wheel not jus rocking the car lol.
My buddy had a talon tsi that was dropped 2 Eibach springs and after hitting the mountain 35MPH corner at about 100MPH a few dozen times the sway bar bushings squeaked like a ****.

Idk if rex3001's noise is like mine, but I am hoping so because I can't figure mine out. Tho hes on stock suspension and im not, so I doubt it.

Mine has a setup i believe known for probs but works great for me now uneven tire wear or creaking.

KYB Rear Tokico Fronts ans Tein Springs 2"

IDK though was thinking about it could still by sway bar bushings "DUH SWAY"
hence the word.

Easy enough to tell. look where the sway bar attaches to the control arm usually can visually see signs of worn bushings.

No, that's your strut boot. It's common for those to be shredded after a while. What he's talking about isn't really visible in that picture - it's the wrapping that goes around the part of the spring that contacts the strut and also the upper part of the spring. you can see it in this picture, credit to pocketrocket:

When I changed my struts and springs, my isolators were beat up pretty bad but I cleaned them off and re used them. Didn't have any squeaks afterwards.

he's just doing what he does best; scope out threads and make the same old useless posts. . had you made a new thread, he would have probably said "WTF REPOST !!!!111ONEONE"

Maybe sometime soon we'll be able to say

hey fat kid,

wow didnt realize this was an old thread... I was just excited to find someone else with the same problem as me, and was hoping people had sure replys.

I'm starting to be more and more convinced its my strut thats making noise, I will replace that eventually and let ya know if it fixed my problem.

Yeah, I am talking about the spiral wrap you put around wire bundles.

hey so i sprayed some WD40 on all four of my struts/springs today before leaving for class and the ride over was much quieter than it usually was =). but then i got home later on and went to check for any more creas again by shaking the car from the top of the wheel well and the noise came back so i sprayed some more all around. haven't been out yet since spraying a second time but it did seem to help a bit after the first spraying.
