Waterpump..How difficult to replace?

Found a coolant drip under my car, heard it could be the waterpump. I won't know for sure until this weekend when I can jack it up and check. Where else might it be coming from. It's not far enough forward to be the radiator. Thanks

Fun job(sarcasm) Just make sure you get the timing chain teeth lined up cirrectly when reinstalling. Takes about 2 hrs total, well that's how long it took me.

TIMING CHAIN!! I don't know if I want to mess with it then. $375 at Pep Boys and about $450 at the the stealer. I think the part is maybe less then $100 though. Since it's cold outside this may not be in my best interest to do myself.

Is that the going rate for labor in NM? Those were the two prices I was quoted here in Austin. About $80 for the part and $230 for labor at Pep Boys.

YEah, you can get the Genuine Nissan part for 77 at pinnacle, but of course shipping and stuff, but still under 90. 45 dollars/hr for labor here and I got quoted 3.5 hrs. I ended up doing it myself, but I think I;d rather pay.

It's one of those jobs that is pretty straightforward but I opted to let someone else do it after I weighed the cost of the "what if something gets screwed up" possibility. I've read just as many "it was pretty easy stories" as I have "now my car won't start, now there's a horrible noise by the timing chain, etc., etc.". To me it was worth the money to let someone else worry about it.

A friend of mine needed a new engine because he bent his valves by messing up something very simple. So, it be st best if you had someone else do it.

Exactly the case with my friend. He took it to nissan for them to do the motor swap, and the tech said even some of his guys have screwed up the motor...

Yeah, I consulted my friend that would assisting me, or me him, and we decided that it would be best to just take in to the shop. Would this be one of those jobs best suited for the dealer instead of a place using after market parts? I know Pep Boys sometimes ends up getting dealer parts anyway. Like I said, it's roughly a $75 dollar difference in them and the dealer. I suppose I should call around and get a few more estimates first.

I told you man, get the GENUINE Nissan Part from Pinncale 77 buxx.

Get the part from Pinnacle and then take it to Pep Boys and have them put it on.

Personally I would feel more comfortable sending this to a dealer, or a machanic you know and trust... I'd be tooo worried about messing something up!

I think a reputable shop would do a good job.

Since you're here in Austin, I could do the job for you for $100, you supply the pump.

By the way, when I replaced mine last September, I found the pump was in great condition, it's just the o-rings that harden up and start to leak. You could save nearly $80 by just buying the o-rings.

Went to the local hardware stores to see if anyone sold o-rings that large. O-rings that large are hard to find. The ones I did find were for plumbing and I think that there are just too many if's you'd be assuming when buying the two for the waterpump. THe material's durability? The thickness of the O-rings? In the end, it may be easier to buy a new pump, if only for piece of mind. JRNissan has it for $75 before the "maxima" discount.

BTW supracobraz, if you leak is on the passenger side front of the engine bay, dripping in front near the alternator/A/C compressor, it probably is coming from the water pump weep hole.

Pep Boys! Not Pep Boys! You guys are breaking my heart. It hurts just to think that somebody would send such a nice car to that wrecking yard. I once had an 89 subaru justy (3 cylinders of raw horsepower) to get a new clutch put in and it came back butchered. Multiple bolts were cross threaded and the heads stripped off. it was a disaster. I figured at least I wouldn't have to worry about a new clutch for the rest of the life of the vehical. I was wrong, 30,000 miles later it was new clutch time. Moral of the story is...please take it to a dealer or a mechanic you trust. Take it to someone who knows what a torque wrench is. As for me, now that I am out of school and have a place to work on my ride I will do everything myself.

Why would I go to a hardware store when I could buy oem o-rings directly from David Burnette at Southpoint Nissan, right here in lovely south Austin?

Yeah, Tim shouldn't have attemted the job himself.
I knew he would screw something up once he found out the water pump ran off of the timing chain.
