Starter????

How do I know if my starter is going bad? Is there a way to test it?
Also is it possible to rebuild it. I seen a thread earlier I forgot if it was the starter or alternator. THat it was rebuild or fixed something like that.

the starter goes on most 4th gens at around +70k especially 95s. if your is bad you need a new starter, most are rebuilt. are you having bad starts? if you shut the car off then turn it back on will it start? let us know more.

THat link is just to regrease it, you think that would actuallymake the starter work, or that is just to stop the noise as labeled in the website?

Regreasing the starter to stop the noise just after the engine catches and you release the key from start to run. Your problem is different. To find out why the starter turns slow, you may want to check: 1/ Voltage at battery terminals while cranking the starter. Even a new battery may be bad or discharged. 2/ Voltage at starter terminal. The solenoid has two posts. First one is connected to a thich cable from battery, second post is connected to the starter internal. You want to measure the voltage at the second post. 3/ If 1 & 2 check out ok, you may want to either put in a new starter or take it apart to clean, use brake cleaner on the gears and electrical part cleaner on the brushes.

Hope that helps...

Starter replacement

I went through the same thing last week. The starter cranked too slow for about 3 tries to start it, then just stopped working all together. I figured it was a battery problem so I replaced that since it tested marginal, but that wasn't it so I took the starter out, cleaned and regreased everything, and it started! Worked fine for 3 days, then it crapped out again. I spent $142.99 at Autozone for a new starter and $70 for the battery. Works perfectly now.
I do recomend the re-grease for anyone else with higher miles, it might extend the starter life beyond 103K miles like mine. You don't realize how slow yours is turning until you hear the car start with a new starter and battery! It starts instantly now. Good luck.

I took it off regreased it and, I benched tested it, I took it to autozone and they told me it doesnt work. Im going to see if I find one at the junkyard or a used one from here on the org. ANd then see if thats why it didnt want to start, or if there is more to the car not wanting to start.

Take it to a good repair shop. My starter stopped working so I took it out and took it to a shop in my hometown this summer. They said one of the brushes had gone bad, fixed it and it was only $30.
