4th gen transmission problem

I wanted to know if this is a common issue on the 4th gen Max's before I start working on my friend's car. He has a 95 GXE max, and is having a 5 second delay in the tranny engaging when he puts it in drive. He has an AT. the car drives normally at any range and through all the gears, he just has a long delay from switching from P to D or R to D

Could it be convertor drainback?

Hook up a tranny pressure guage (rent one from Autozone if you have to) to the pressure test fitting and watch the tranny fluid pressure. If the pressure is normal through the 5sec delay then it could be a stick/sluggish valve/solenoid. If the pressure drops then there could be some internal leak somewhere.

You also need to try to get hold of a tranny commander, or make one using the tranny wiring diagram so you can understand what the computer is telling the tranny to do, and what feedback the tranny is giving.

if he can get the starter to work, we are gonna run a self diag on it first, then do a pressure check
