I have never had to mess with a cotter pin or anything. Just two bolts (the larger ones) on the back side of the caliper brace. Take them off and wiggle and the whold thing will come off connected by the brake fluid hose. Don't let it hang by the hose!!! After that, the rotor should just pop off.

Don't mess with the big nut w/cotter pin. That's the axle-nut, and its removal is not needed to remove the rotor.
You shouldn't even need to remove the rotor to replace a wheel stud. There should be a hole in the back of the brake dust shield...just line the stud up with that hole and pop it out w/a hammer. The new one goes in through the same hole.
If you're still hell bent on getting that rotor off, remove the torque member (caliper mounting bracket), hang it out of the way (NOT by the brake line) and either bang on the rotor with a hammer or get a few bolts (I forget the size) and turn them into the little holes on the center of the disk; that'll separate the rotor for you.
Good luck!
