HELP! Car overheats when in gear but not when idle...
Now after reading a few threads I suspect it may be a thermostat problem. BUT I noticed that there is absolutely no coolant in the resivoir anymore...I haven't checked the rad yet because the car is still hot. Also there is a chance that my CV joint/drive shaft may be messed up since my install on my struts/springs this weekend.
Anyhow, after starting the car up and putting in gear I heard a metallic hiss/rub when I started to drive. When I went back into neutral and stopped the metallic hiss stopped. A minute later I hear my fans working extremely hard and then my temperature started to rise extremely quickly when driving. I had to shut it down, wait a bit then turn it on. At idle/neutral the car wasn't overheating,. but as soon as I put it in gear, after 30 seconds it would start to rise really fast again. What can be causing this??
Anyhelp extremely appreciated.

It might also be your water pump. Try to listen to where that metal sound is coming from. If its coming from the front of the engine near the pulley's it might be the water pump bearing that went on you. If your loosing anti freeze take a look around the passengers side tire. If you have some kind of mystery leak that you cant find anywhere... its your water pump. I had that leak problem. The water pump job is no joke.
Thanks for the tip.....but
I THINK MY ENGINE IS DONE. I just looked and the hose that leads from the rad to the thermostat is disconnected by the rad...does this mean my engine is cooked or was there enough coolant in the block to prevent something major?

Depends how hard you ran it without coolant. Aluminum heads and block are the worst against heat. Iron blocks can hold a little more heat. You could've warped the heads or block or if you were lucky not a thing. I dont know what to tell you other than if you want to take the chance of filling it back up and seeing how it runs. Just dont be surprised if you starts spewing alot of white smoke... over heating also tends to burn up head gaskets.....
Well I clamped the hose using one of those screw type ones that are found in the plumbing department of a hardware store. I filled it back up with radfluid/water and it seems to run fine.
When the car was without the radiator, I drove it pretty easy and never really let the temp get past 3/4. I hope there are no serious repercussion within the next few days.
I am still bloody clueless as to how that hose would have come off in the first place.

BTW, You should never have the coolant reservoir totally empty--you then have no clue how much coolant is in the system. If you have it full and the level drops significantly, that tells you that you probably have a leak somewhere.
Anyways, hopefully the engine is fine...

Well originally the reservoir wasn't empty...it was always between the empty and full mark. It was because that hose got disconnected that the rad sucked all of it out.
