When should you change your ignition coil?

If there's nothing wrong with the ignition coil should you buy a new one if you're getting a tune up? I have a 98 maxima se, which side is the ignition coil on passenger or driver?

it's easy to tell when your coil(s) is/are going because you start noticing micro-second pauses or hesitations in acceleration.

what's hard is diagnosing which coil is actually bad, causing these hesitations. Why? Because although one can test the coils, a slightly deteriorated coil, which causes random hesitations, often appears to be good/perfect after such test.

So, provided that testing the coil(s) does you no good, the easiest thing is to swap a NEW coil with the rest and see when the hesitations stop. Then, you know which one is bad, provided of course it was "one".

To clear things up a bit, there is a coil for each spark plug. They are located under the cover on each cylinder bank. Unscew the cover, remove the connectors from the coils and pull them straight out. In spect each one for cracks in the casing and corrosion on the contacts.

Thanks for the information. I got a quote on one ignition coil for around 80 bucks from advanced auto parts. I'm hoping I don't need one, but is there a possibility that more than one coil could be bad. I feel some hesitation when I accelerate but I think I just need new plugs. Is it difficult to put new plugs in?

get a multi meter and ohm the coils packs. there are 3 prongs B + G i dunno if thats the order in which it is but get a hanes manual. The correct ohms should be Infinite. if u get a number other than 1(which is infinite) your coil is screwed. i replaced 4 of my coils right now. and 2 are still bad. My Engine feels like its going to fall apart. sort of a misfire. you can get ignition coils from jerryromenissan.com for $65

2 kinds of coils

3 Left and 3 right

spark plugs are easy to replace. located under the coil pack.
