I have a 96 SE. I had read that in 5th gear it is governed at 112 mph, but in 4th the rpms are the only limit...getting it to 130 mph. Well, the other night I tested that, and in 5th gear what stopped me was that I ran out of speedometer, at 140 mph--and there was at least another 1000 rpms until redline. Did someone before me have a governor removed, or was I wrong in thinking that there was one?

There is no speed-limiter on the SE model.

I believe the new ones (2k+) are limited to 130 but I'm probably wrong. It's questionable if 4th gen GLEs are (mine and alot of others aren't) but some GXEs seem to be.

Tires are the determining factor

So far as I know the '98 SE has no speed limiter. The purpose of the speed-limiter is to prevent the car from going faster than the speed rating of the original equipment tires. The SE was factory-equipped with performance tires so there was no need for a limiter.

It's locked inside the ECM

The speed limiter is embedded in the Engine Control Module (the computer). You can't really remove the limiter. You can replace a the ECM in a non-SE Maxima with one which was originally in an SE, or you can buy one of the aftermarket "go fast" ECMs. AFAIK the aftermarket units are available only for '95-'96 models. The makers claim that Maximas equipped with their products make more power. That point has been hotly debated in this forum. I'm satisfied with the power made by the stock engine so I have no intention of buying an aftermarket unit.

Only Non - Saftey and Convienced GXE's have limiters.. all other maxima's are not limited, that means an AUTO GXE with Saftey and Convience Package will have no limiter..

Options to remove limiter:

Buy an SE ECU for the same year as your car from a junkyard $85 - $200
Buy some Unit Apex'i has for like $150 that removes it
Cut the speed sensor wire(don't recommend this)
Buy a Fields Fuel Controller ($220)

Governor?

Is the general consensus here that only 5 speed GXE models (mine) has the 112 mph governor in 5th gear? I too noticed this governor... not that i would ever go that fast on a public road....

Thanks,
Neal

theres all of these questions on which has the governor, i have a 95 GLE and ive taken it to like 117 then slowed down because i was on a main road that has a long stretch i wasnt even on a highway lol... then someone told me its governed at 120 so with my curiousity, one of these days im gonna take it back up and see if it kicks out at 120... ive taken it up to 110 many times so i guess when i have the urge ill keep my foot down on the pedal... even if my car is limited its probably best that i dont take it over 120, no need to do so other than to see what my car can get to
