Max won't start, ECU codes undefined!

I have a '99 maxima. It was driving just fine yesterday when I parked it, ran into my house for 10 minutes and came back out and the car would start but 2 seconds later it died. This happened 2-3 times and then I let it sit. Came back out several hours later and the car will turn over now, but not start at all. This is a manual transmission btw.

I've checked all the spark plugs - they have spark. I read that if you turn the car to the ON position and hear a whirring for a few seconds from the gas tank area, the fuel pump must be ok. I can hear the noise, so I think the fuel pump is ok.

I checked my codes and I'm getting 2 codes that aren't available on the ECU decoder at vbxmaxima. I'm getting a 14 01 and a 14 02. I've checked this several times and yes, it's 14. Does anyone know what these codes mean?
How can I translate these longs and shorts to the DTC "P" codes?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ok, assuming that the long and shorts are used directly for the DTCs, my codes are P1401 and P1402. I found these here http://www.troublecodes.net/Nissan/95ams96-00.shtml. the codes are:

P1401 EGR Temperature Sensor
P1402 ECR System

Does this imply that the EGR temperature sensor is bad and I should simply change it out? Has anyone seen this problem or replace the ECR temperator sensor on a 99 max?

Check your fuses or starting relay....these things can cause a lot fo frustration and they are easyto replace.....get a volt-meter and see if you're getting hte correct current through your fuses going to the starter. Another possible frustration might be your neautral saftey switch...or even your alternater....try those and let us know.

0305
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0305 points to a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor. This sensor is a thermistor (a resistor with a value which varies inversely with temperature). The EGRTS is used by the Engine Control Module to test the EGR system operation. Since the signal from the EGRTS is not used for engine operation your car should run perfectly well despite having the Check Engine Light on.

Possible causes of DTC 0305 include ...
- harness or connectors (The EGRTS circuit is open or shorted)
- bad EGRTS
- malfunction elsewhere in the EGR system

The EGRTS may be tested with an ohmmeter.
- at "D" degrees F the resistance should "R" (in Megohms) should be ...
D = 32, R = 0.68-1.11
D = 122, R = 0.09-0.12
D = 212, R = 0.017-0.024

kevlo, is DTC 0305 equivalent to 14 longs and 1 short engine light blinks? Did I assume incorrectly about that being P1401?

Since my car won't start, it kind of looks like the EGR system isn't the culprit. Is that a fair assumption? I'll clear out the codes and try to start the car again, maybe those are left over codes?

Linkage, I'll definately look at the fuses. Thanks. Are the relays parts that would just break just like that. It was so sudden and I didn't see a check engine light the last time the car was running. Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

kevlo, I see now that you've copied from an old thread.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=235667

How did you know that 14 longs and 1 blink is DTC 0305? Even this old thread didn't list that.

I had the car towed to a mechanic and they say that the immobilizer has been setoff. Apparently when the ECU thinks the key used doesn't have the correct chip, the car is immobilized and will not start until Nissan reprograms the ECU. Has anyone seen this? I'm suspicious.

Well gents, who knew. The immobilizer kicked in. The ECU has been reset and the chips in the keys re-registered and it's working again. Do these things just up and lose their memory like that? Funny thing is that once they did that, now the front passenger window won't roll up. It'll roll down, no up. I know for a fact that this didn't occur before this immobilizer problem. Could I have had a power surge? Funny as it sounds, this problem makes no sense to me why it would all of a sudden forget the key chip code.
