New to 4th generation have questions on purchase

Okay here I am new at 4th generation, have a few questions. I currently own a 1994 (3rd gen) and fell in love with it. I have dealt with all the typical issues, leaking exhaust studs, window & antenna motors, seat belt alarms, timing belt and what ever else is common. Its been so much fun I want to move on to a 1997-1998. Can you tell me if I’m going to deal with the same issues or perhaps what’s new for problems. What should I look for when buying this new car? Is it the same engine? Does it also get 29 mpg on the hi-way? Will I like it as much as my 94 ya think?

Thanks, Billy

Thanks, As much as I like to bang the gears in a sports car I need an Automatic for the commute ride, no fun shifting in stop & go traffic. I have a GLX now, is that what I need in a 98 ?

If you want leather and everything....I would recommend GLE. That is the version that gets lots of extras, but you can only get it in an auto....which is what you want.

Otherwise, just get an SE (You can get these loaded and I actually prefer the loaded SE to the GLE) with whatever options you like.

Also, GXE is bottom of the line, but they still all have 4 wheel disc brakes, power windows, A/C and all the other standard Nissan options. Most are still auto and cloth, but it just depends on whatever you are looking for.

They are not the same engine. The engine in the 97-98 is the VQ30DE and has been on Ward's "Ten Best Engines" list since it was produced. The newer maximas still run a higher version of this engine....the VQ35. Anyway, it is an award winning engine and car, and you will not be disappointed.

No there is no timing belts on 4th gen , they have timing chain they usualy last a lifetime of the car, If u getting a 4th gen make sure to check ecu codes because as far as I know alot of 4th gens have bad KS but dont quote me on that thou

'97 & '98 models are currently under an alternator recall

unlike the timing belt on your '94, the '97 & '98 VQ30 use a timing chain which never needs to be replaced

Suggestion, and as Brudaddy mentioned, if you want a loaded max, try to find an SE fully loaded, you can equip them like the GLE, but you'll have the sportier ride w/ the SE

other than that you can never go wrong w/ a '97 or '98 Max
