sunroof won't close completely

hello, I just bought my first maxima (1996 se). The private seller that I bought it from told me not to use the sunroof becuase it would not close. so of course the first thing I try to do is fix the sunroof. This is before I read some post on the internet about the railing malfunctioning. It opens fine but wont close, so I have to manually close it with my hand. the problem with this is that when I tried to close it, it will only close at a slight slant that makes the back of the sunroof about half an inch below where it should be. I need to atleast get it closed correctly before it rains again here and leaks into my car. Thank you for any help you can give me.

you're probably screwed. get ready to drop the head liner and sunroof motor and slide the glass around untill it gets back on track.... 3 hours of fun for me.

yeah i just had that problem about a month ago...You're gonna need to get a sunroof repair kit (part #: 91350-40u20) from your Nissan dealer. I got mine for under $70 shipped to my door. When you get it, you're gonna have to take out the headliner and all the trim necessary to remove the headliner, visors, rear view mirror, top of the seat belts, a pillars, etc...then you're going to unbolt the sunroof and disconnect the drainage tubes, all the electronics, etc...remove the sunroof assy. (It'll be hard, have another person or two handy). Follow the instructions they give you to install the new slides/cables, etc...Reinstall, and enjoy. This is a major pain, trust me. It takes a while. Take your time or you might break something. It was well worth it in the end for me, because I was able to do it all in about 4 hours, vs. spending $600-$1000 to have the dealer do it for you. Oh, and you won't have to worry about rain getting it...It was pouring while mine was broke...there are drain gutters and tubes (four of them, one at each corner) that act as a backup. They run down the a pillars in the fron and the rear ones too, then drain on the ground. I'm 95% sure you have a broken cable on one side. The sunroof is moved all the way forward, right, but the one of the rear corners is lower than the rest of the roof, and it's not sealed? If ya need any info or copy of instuctions, let me know. Good luck!

I'm having a problem with my sunroof as well. However all of the functions work.

I can tilt and slide the roof, however the roof will not return to the proper height. So if I want to slide it, I have to push the vent mode and tilt the sunroof down and then I can press the slide button to open and close it. However when it closes, it remains below the roof line by about 3/4" and I have to use the vent button to raise it level with the roof to prevent wind noise.

Something must be out of adjustment. Perhaps one of you guys who have done the rebuild know of the fix. However if I have to pull the headliner and everything to get to the sunroof, I think I'll just rebuild the thing just for the piece of mind.

Thanks for any info. I have not had a chance to look at the service manual yet.

All I can say is there is no easy way to remedy this. And nothing will be done without dropping the headliner, so start there! A lot of attachment points all around as well as the light in the middle and hooks around the moon roof. Took me around 2 hours to find everything and patiently figure out how to coax it apart without destroying said attachment points.

Then you can see where the problem(s) are and hopefully address them, even if just a temporary fix to keep the car dry.

There are no more repair kits. Junk yards and used auto places online might be your best bet. Unfortunately, you didn't populate your profile, with location and other intelligent things so we could recommend!

Making it easy for us to help you!

Good luck!
