what $6000 in Damage looks like.....

on wenesday morning i began my regular painful 40 mile journey to work, from randolph MA or North Billerica MA. so there is was on route 128/95north sitting in traffic when all of a sudden a look through my rear view mirro and my car is cover in crap(drive way top coat sealant). i look to my right and there is a Asphalt truck next to me.. i get in front of the guy flag him down he pulls over and tell me to call the company they will get the car detailed. Basically i go to the detailer they are unable to remove it so the car has to be repainted. i have had one apprasial done and the initial estimate is $6009.80 not including a rental for me for the 2.5 weeks the car will be in the body shop. So i am guess it will be about $7000 in damage their insurance company is going to be paying out. i am worried they may total the car since damage may exceed 2/3's value of the car. if they do pay me the money should i fix the car? i am skeptical about putting $6000 into a car that is aorth $9000-$10000. anyway here are they pics.
this was the car before

i may just fix the rear winshield since MY insurance will repace it under glass claim coverage. i don't really mind how the spots look. $6000 in the bank is one step closer to my Z. and i do own the maxima its all paid off and runs like a top.

wow that is a pretty high price for a paint job, considering only half the car needs new paint... get an estimate for only the rear clip to be painted it should be cheaper and more $$ for ur bank, if ur plans are to get a new car it wont really matter if the color isnt prefect match, just makes the car alot easier to sell....or see if compuond and a buffing wheel will get it off

as for the glass see if u can "polish" it hit it with some paint thinner and either 0-2 steel wool (use the thinner as a lube and a remover, let the thinner soak in for 1 minute before u start scrubbing with the wool and thinner) it should remove it but dont apply too much pressure to the wool, for a test do a small area if it works then move on to the rest of the glass

Good job being alert and getting the guy to stop and admit to the damage. If you only noticed it minutes later you woulda been screwed.
What exactly IS that stuff ?

Man, that sucks bad! I probably would have pulled the guy out of his truck & gave him a beating for that. even if it was his fault or not! I don't know where you went to get a estimate of 6 grand for paint, but thats pretty damn high in my opinion for a paint job. To me a excellent paint job with either PPG or dupont paint should run somewhere between $2,500 - $4,000. Especially if there isn't any body work needed. Having worked in that field for quite a long time, I can tell you that just from looking at the damage all the paint shop is gonna do is use a DA & sand the car until that crap is off & tehn they'll spray the base coat & clear coat. It's not like the entire car has to be completely stripped & reprimed, based & clearcoated. The only other thing i can think of is paint work is just way over priced in your neck of the woods. Either way I feel bad for you man. But I hope your not expecting to keep the car? Because if their insurence company considers it totalled & gives you a pay out based on blue book value then they will own your car. You will probably have the option to buy it back from them, but then it will have a salvage title. Which in my opinion sucks because it's not like the car was in some major accident? Anyway, good luck getting matters resolved!

basically all the moldings that were touched need to be replaced. the rear windshield is $900 alone. a new wheel $390. it works up to like $3000 in parts and $2500 in labor then tax and disposal fees. this is what the body shop quoted. the insurance has yet to send out its own apraiser.

i am going to keep the car. until next august when i graduate then buy the Z. my brother hs a 6speed G35 coupe i play with every once in a while.

Its industrial grade top sealant for drive ways. it has silica sand added for traction. that is why it can't be wiped off it will destroy the paint. the detailed who the car was sent to prior to them sending in a claim against there insurance deals with this situation often just on a smaller scale. he tried everything, kerosene, thinner, goo gone and tar remover. nothing. he said only way it can be removed is if the car is stripped and repainted. if none of you guys have ever seen one
my car is a Sherwood Green 1999 SE-L.

i loved the color

No way a rear windshield is really $900 (maybe from the dealer). Get the money, then try looking around junkyards for the parts.

I think I would keep the money in the bank and fix my car. It won't take $6000 to fix the paint plus why go for a more expensive car.

The 2/3 of the vehicle value is total crap. You have to call your insurance company and ask them what the number is. With allstate in illinois to total a vehicle the damage has to be 100%.

Also they (or you for that matter) CAN paint the wheel. Lots of people do it to change the color of their wheels. The aircraft stripper people use to take off the OE paint would probably take off that junk too and if not just sand it down first. There are instructions in the faqs someplace.

Good luck with the Z...I hear ya in reguards to the pretty boyish G35 vs. a legendary Z. In my opinion, the 350Z gives more bang for the buck, considering base model is like $26k. I don't know what the G coupe runs, but it's gotta be closer to the track edition Z as far as costs ($35k).

That sucks, man.
Sorry to hear that.
I know you had a good looking max.
I would go for the G35 sedan....they are actually supposed to be a little faster than the coupes because they are a little lighter.

Anyway, keep us posted on what you decide.

Try some LimeAway/CLR or bleach, I was useing these to clean our Ice Machine(it said to use these to clean machine so your ice is clean) and I was spraying this plasitc peice and some of the bleach or Limeaway/CLR got on our parkinglot and took of the blacktop. So it may take it off your paint.

Sorry to hear about your luck.

That road sucks! I was rearended there 2 times in 3 months in my max during the morning rush hour commute a few years ago. It was just marks on the bumber. The insurance company of the 2nd person that hit me paid to have it refinished.

Aside form the tar on your car it looks great.

Good Luck in what ever you decide.

Is that the same as Deep Evergreen? Looks just like my car.

Sucks man, same thing happened to my dad's maxima. Except it was a tanker truck that had just been washed out on the inside and it had some kind of acid in there (it's an ingredient in coca cola).

The moonroof on my pop's car was open when he stopped behind the tanker and a huge wave of the **** came down. It burned right through the fabric - including my shirt!
