help. am i right and if so....?

97 SE. Ok, got a check engine light and looked up the codes and if I'm reading them right it's showing a front and rear 02 sensor. Car was running great before I took the battery out to clean it up. As soon as I put it back in the light came on and I've got all the symptoms- bad gas mileage, slow acceleration, and I know they haven't been replaced in atleast 4 years. Could it be that my sensors were on the verge of going and when I put my battery back in after disconnecting it, it sent a surge to the sensors and killed them? Or just a coincidence? I'm having a dealer check the car because I just want to know for sure. If they say it's the sensors, should I have them do it or try to take it on myself? I know dealers rape people on stuff like this but from what I've read about replacing the sensors, it seems like a huge pain. Thanks for the help guys.

Get a Haynes Manual.. It has procedures for testing almost all the sensors yourself.

replace it your self. jack car up on ramps, secure vehical. Get under vehical and put some PB Blaster on the o2 sensor, come back in a little bit. Unplug o2 sensor. use the o2 sensor tool to remove the sensor. you might need to cut off one of the hangers, but do not cut the harness. use some lub on the threads of the sensor to make it easier next time to remove the sensor. put the new sensor back in and tighten to oem specs.. Reset Your Computer and then Drive.

Tools Needed.

Ramps
Ratchet with o2 sensor socket
PB Blaster
Haynes Manual for Torque Specs
Torque wrench.
