is it really autotragic?

whats going on orger's as you may know i have a automatic gxe 95 pretty fast too, but i keep hearing and seeing dyno's of how 5 speeds are so much faster than auto's so that made me wanna get rid of mines and get a 5 speed too. i was talking to my mechanic and he said just get a tranny kit i wont lose that hesitation that auto's have in the beginning but he said after i start rolling my auto will pull to redline hard like a stick with quicker, harder gear changes sooooooo.. for about $150 for the kit i would go for it but wanted to know if anyone had any experience with a kit like this or know any info that i should know please let me know and with the addition of a mevi i just wonder of the posabilities

i have a vb. it's great. best mod i'v ever done. a 5 speed will still be much faster because of less drivetrain loss and shorter/more gears.

I have already posted this twice today. The VB is the rich man's shift kit. Pop the hood and unplug the drop resistor on the drivers side strut tower. Drive around like that for a while and see if you like. Its not harmful and it makes the shifts instantaneous. A good driver can shift nearly as fast as the auto and will have more power to the ground as well as benificial gear ratios. Difference between 5Spd and auto is a full second in the 1/4 mile. Autos are a modern marvel for convienence but do suck on the power side.

BTW, REPOST!

A VB mod or DR mod will not make your car as quick as a 5-speed car. There's a lot more to it than just slower shifts.

I wouldn't recommend the drop resistor mod unless you have a switch inside the car. I read awhile back a few people who kept it on allt he time are now running into tranny problems.

You take the valve body out of your trans and send it away. They wave their magic wand over it and send it back to you. You pay them $350 to do this.

go to www.transgo.com to look this kit up and to see what it does i went to the contact us section and found their number called them and gave them my car info and the guy said he has two types for the max one with a video to show you how to put this on which might cost alittle bit more or the other one with just the kit and regular instruction and you take it to a mechanic. the phone number is 626-443-4953 for the interested

same thing happened to me. I emailed him numerous times and he never responded so I went to mobiltek instead and was more than pleased with their service.

I wouldn't say the difference in performance is a full second. It's more like ~.5 seconds and ~4mph in the 1/4 mile. BSwithTF has a auto GXE with the VI, Y, I, ECU, and exhaust and I have a 5 speed SE. We have similiar 60 foots and he runs lower 14.8s@93mph and I run mid/low 14.4s@98mph+.

If you re-read my post carefully you'll notice that I said drive around like that for a while. This means that I do not recomend to leave it unplugged for the entire remaining life of the car. If you looked at my site you would see that mine is in fact switched.

Dave, thats interesting information. I think that the ECU helps the auto get out of the hole a lot quicker thus reducing one of the major downfalls of our auto. If you take a stock 5Spd and stock auto the difference is nearly a full second. 15.5 to 14.7 is .8 seconds.

It's hard to say what a stock auto 4th gen will do vs a stock 5 speed 4th gen because the difference in tracks and car setups (driver weight, cargo onboard, etc) play critical rolls in how a car will perform. Going by the magizines, the fastest 5 speed went 15.2@92mph and the fastest auto went 15.4@89mph. I've seen some tests showing 15.6@90mph for the 5 speed and 16.0@86mph for the auto. Either way, the data suggests about a .4 and 3mph difference on average for stock. As power is added it seems that the gap slightly widens in the 5 speeds favor.

Take a hard drive in a 5 speed and then an auto and you'd swear the 5 speed is much faster than the auto. In reality, a lot of perceived power is the violent rocking on the shifts and the deeper gear multiplication. Basically the sensation of torque makes the 5 speed feel much faster. The autos seem to suffer in acceleration in two places, 0-20mph and 40-55mph otherwise the acceleration seems to be fairly even to around 100mph or so. This is assuming mod for mod.

On the dyno, the auto seems to give up about 15whp/15wtq at every point on the curve compared to the 5 speed.

Goodhead that is clearly all in your head. The forces that your body experiences give the impression of being faster. Dave was mentioning this earlier. The only time you would want to shift manually is if you were having fun or had a VI with extended redline. Two things may happen when you shift manually. First, you shift to late. This makes the engine spend too much time in the high RPM where it begins to lose power rapidly. Or second, you shift too early and the TCM takes over and does the job correctly. My guess would be that you do the first the most because you feel you are going faster. If you don't believe me go to a track and see for yourself. And after writing all this I just saw the smiley at the end of your post but I'm going to leave this just in case you aren't being sarcastic.

Are you sure about it not hurting the transmission? Its there for a reason isnt it? Slapping gears onto eachother isnt good for the clutches.

VB saves the clutches... it shifts faster, hence less time your clutches spend in limbo waiting to shift into gear, which is what causes heat and causes them to get damaged.

You nailed it on the head Ant. The DR is there stock because this is a sport luxury sedan. You can't have luxury if your neck is breaking every shift.

u can rewire ur resistor to a WOT switch...this is prolly the best. ..it doesnt shift hard and partial throttle but at WOT it shift fast and hard like u want it too....

You can unplug it just to test it out. If you don't like it you just plug it back and be done with it. If you do like it you can run it to a WOT switch or just a manual switch inside the car.
