The Maxima VQ valves can be adjusted with shims. It's not a hydraulic lifter setup, it's a bucket and shim setup.
The Haynes manual, section 2B-5 through 2B-6 explains the process in depth. You need a special valve lifter tool to compress the bucket and get the shim loose.
My Yamaha FJ1200 has the same setup, it's a PITA to adjust.
The VQ really shouldn't need any valve maintanence over it's life if the motor is maintained correctly.
Valve clearance (cold) is as follows:
Intake .010 to .013 inch (.26 to .43mm)
Exhause .011 to .015 inch (.29 to .37mm)

Ok, well its good to know that the engine's valve lash doesnt go out. Has anyone actually cracked their head open and checked the clearance. I was just curious at 116,000 if it was time to adjust those babies

Someone said that the maxima should be good with its valve clearence for its lifetime.
And I just asked if anyone ever took their head off and checked to see is this statement was true or not..... that the Maxima's clearence will not acheive an improper lash
