Was i stupid for doing this....

So i was trying to install some leds in my car ( in the vents) and well i needed some power to pwoer the leds and i desided to use the power that is in the cig lighter.....so i didn't have a power tester thingy so i just desided to connect the test led stright to the cig lighter just to test...i connected it to the 2 metal prongs that come out of the cig lighter and connect to the plug thing....and i told my bro the turn the car on and i saw a spark and now my cig lighter doesn't work....i haven't had a chance to check the fuses, but i am assuming that it is somewhere under the hood....any body have a good way to connect these leds...right now its ghetto rigged...a.k.a. running off a 9v battery...

check your fuses under the dash, Im sure thats where the blown fuse is,there is one for the cig lighter, its blown to ****.

I think it would have been smarter to get a tester, but atleast it was (hopefully) just the cig fuse thats is blown.

I'd say 99.99 percent its just a fuse, and theres nothing stupid about doing that, on my previous max i used the cig lighter the same way you did to power, my in dash 7" TV, my radar dectector AND my DVD player and it worked fine, with the original amp fuse. So i'm sure that one can power an LED just fine, u probably just connected it wrong or had it ground out somewhere.

It was overpowered... 99% of the time an LED needs a resistor so it's not overpowered. Connecting it directly to the lighter blew the LED and the fuse and hopefully that's all.

Here's some good LED info:

from that page I posted above... read it, it'll save you a lot of LEDs.

i did use a resistor...i attached the resistor to the postive side of the led as i usally do (i have been playing around with it and using 9Vbatteries) and when i say prong i am talking about the 2 plug like things coming out of the cig lighter....

heres a pic of what i mean

now with that pic did i blow my fuse?

So how are we to know if you blew the fuse if you don't look in the fusebox?

Check the fuses then come back and you tell us if you blew the fuse with your picture.
