man, I think the radio may be gone, I did that too and I lost the radio on the spare bose unit, and I lost the display. Got the display back but still cant get the radio, I'd try poping off the resistor and see, nothing left to lose now as the whole unit doesnt work. . . but still be careful.
It worked fine? Did he have to change the connectors or anything? Because I am in the process of getting a 99 head unit. I called Nissan to double check if the swap would work and he was all like the connectors are different and there is a security thing on the 99 Bose. Than he finally answered my question of yes or no would it work with "Trial and error."

ok just bought new stereo unit for 30$+, got some install kit, wire harness, with total of 80$+. installed, seems to work fine for now. no more freaken cd player tape adaptors for me. as for that stock unit, i was just too lazy trying to solder it, tossed it out (the stock one sux). i dont think soldering would have helped me with cd error issue since mine seems to have a laser problem issue. i dropped like 3 screws in there, and stripped one screw at the bracket with those 4 screws, had to drill it through to remove the stereo. as for your grounding question, the stock is already grounded with the black wire so you dont need to worry about grounding.

bad news. my headunit worked for a couple of days, after i soldered those resistors. then suddenly, when i was inserting a cd last night, it failed. the whole unit was dead again, like old time. today, i did the solder job again (really quick this time), and plug in the harness. it worked for a while, then failed when i ejected cd. now i think enough is enough. i collected all the tools and put them into closet. i'll forget about bose headunit from now on. maybe this is its natual life span. good luck to you guys.

Bose Tape problems

Hey Guys,
I tried to reflow the solder joints on these resistors as others have attempted. I took a magnifier and it is noticeable that there are poor connections. This causes intermittent failures as connections is made and disconnected. Temperature and vibrations will greatly affect the connections. After resoldering this will go away.

I didn't have very noticeable failures with the Cd Err problems, but the resistor connections were poor. So I resoldered them. One of the resistors, as soon as I touched one side of the resistor with the soldering iron, the resistor moved. This indicates a definite connection problem on the other side of the resistor. I do alot of electronics work and that is how I tack down resistors onto board assemblies. I tack one side down as I posistion part in correctly. Then the other side is soldered.

There are definetely bad connections here, probably this is a manfucturing defect becuase these resistors are 2010 packages and they require more heat and solder than other smaller components. It is not coincidence that solder problems are on these 2010 packages.

Majority of my problems are related to tape not functioning properly. Any one know which board or components affect the functionality of the tape. I suspect bad connection with this also, but have unable to find this. The tape doesn't play sometimes, sometimes it ejects when trying to forward or reverse, and etc.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I'd assume that there are more resistors on the tape player unit board that have cracked solder as well. The whole tape unit can be separated from the rest of the head unit, which would leave one to be able to further inspect any bad soldering connections. One has to remember that these things are manufactured robotically, and it's obvious that they were all bad. I too have taken my '96 Bose apart, and fixed both the CD player AND the blank screen. Both of them worked, but the CD part recently stopped working again. I gave up and hard-wired my iPod in, so now I have no need for the CD player. As for the resistors, all you need to do is remelt the solder on both sides of the connection to get the crack to go away. Also, a round shaped resistor can be used, and a .25Watt power rating should be more than plenty. The original resistor is small and cubical because it makes them easier to solder onto boards when being manufactured.

I guess I'll just start resoldering.
