Well..if it's leaking, it's definitely the seal...now that may indicate a bigger problem.
The seals are ~$5 each... As to how much to replace them...that depends. I can replace mine for ~$10...but I turn my own wrench. I don't know how much a dealer will charge.
As to rebuilding...that all depends too. If you're talking the differential bearings, it should run you ~$500 (Poughkeepsie, NY prices)...if you mean rebuilding the whole thing...look to spend $1k or more.
WOT == Wide Open Throttle
[edit]Actually, I misspoke...it costs me more than ~$10 to replace my seals. I forgot about new gear oil. Add anywhere from $10 to $40 depending on the oil you choose.[/edit]

Find out where the leak is. Sometimes the neutral pos. switch leaks. If it's from the seals (driver's side in particular), I think you are screwed and I would just continue to drive it until it leaks badly--then deal with it.

Mishmosh...good point. I assumed outsider was referring to a leak from the seal.
Get under there and see if it's the seal or the switch. I've found that a digital camera w/macro capabilities works great when finding these things. Reach in and snap a few pics!

The gear selector sensor is near the driver's side axle. You'll have to get under there and check.
There's a picture that shows the two. (I happend to have one in my camera)

You check the tranny fluid level by removing the fill plug and sticking your finger in there...if it gets wet, you're good. (I wish there was a more elegant way of testing this )
As for the neutral switch, you shouldn't need a new one unless yours is broken. There is an O-ring on the switch that can be replaced if it's leaking.

Hmm...not sure how to check the fluid on an Auto Maxima...IIRC, my old van had some kind of procedure to check it...had to warm up and then cycle all the gears for a few seconds each...then check it. Check your manual.
Did you locate the leak?
(PS - ignore my previous post as I was referring to a 5spd)
