Rear axle seal leak question...how much $$?

My mechanic just told me that I have a rear axle seal leak. I guess my tran. fluid. He said it would prob. run between $150-200. Is that a good price? Is this something that I could fix my self (im a newbie when it comes to cars, but willing to learn). HAs anyone else had this problem and what can it lead to?

any other info about this problem would help too...thx

Does he mean the axle seals, or the REAR main seal?

These are two totally different animals.

rear axle seal is a combo contradiction of terms.
1) maxima doesn't have a rear axle perse. aka no rear driveline
2) There are seals back there but on each wheel. Not on the non existent axles
3) There are two axles but they are on the front of the car. Not the rear. But they do have seals and they can leak.
4) There is also a rear main seal. But it's not in the rear of the car, nor is it on any axles.

so I'm

Whew I thought I was the only one floored by a Maxima rear axle seal leaking. That's a common problem on Volvo 240's after about 150,000, the axle cover, bearings, seals, and universal joint and carrier bearings all go bad. Spotting gear oil that is sprayed under the car and on the exhaust system is a sign.

Not having any of these parts has saved the auto industry millions upon billions over the last 30 years--just not sure how they convinced the general public that FWD is better!
