Tranny spring just "fell" out....

..So I'm changing the tranny oil...Once I open the drain bolt, the oil started to drip down very slowly, so I decided to change my gear to Neutral...As I was doing that I heard two metal parts hit the oil pan. I looked and saw one spring, about 1.5-2 inches tall and a small metal ball (bearing?). I got very scared and confused....continued on with the oil change and after that attempted to move the car. All gears work but the shifter has a lot more play in it now, its easier to pop gears but it just flies around a little more than I'm used to.

Anyone have any idea what the spring and ball are for?
Also, I realized my brake lights don't work...I checked the fuses but they were allright..

i think they keep the shifter lockd into gear. you can problaby not pop it out of gear without any resistance. thats what the ball and spring do.

You drained from the wrong hole...those peices have to go back into the tranny in the same order they came out...the drain is kinda hidden in the back of the tranny near the cross member of the frame...youll need an open ended 12mm or 14mm (cant remember) to get it..a closed wrench won't fit onto it...

You lost the far left ball and spring in this assembly.

Put the ball in, then the spring, then the bolt.

Also, next time change your oil by removing the speed sensor - 100 times faster and easier to get to then the actual drain plug - just be careful, the plastic is a little fragile.

by not having that spring in you will be able to push the shifter out of gear without pushing the clutch in = not good.
