replacing the starter
I was trying to do a search on this but the site is not allowing me to do this.
Does anyone have a link or some information on how I could replace the starter on my 97 maxima. . .

It's not really hard. It's on top of the transmission. So the best way is to go in from the top. Remove the airbox and a few other odds and ends, and you'll be able to see it. Make sure you have a large selection of sockets available for both 3/8 and 1/2" drive. One of the two bolts will seem next to impossible to remove because it serves as a bolt for the transmission bellhousing, so when you reinstall make sure it is just as tight.

Thanks, I really appreciate the quick response. I am thinking about replacing it because the car starts when it feels like it now. . . Should I replace the starter or is there something else I can do to repair the current starter?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but I would like to do this right.

Sometimes it works, and other times, not at all? When it works maybe it's a little slow? I imagine you're having the same problem I had on mine, which I think is fairly common. There are a couple of wires on the outside that start to chafe and wear through, causing an intermittent short. I suppose you can try to repair or replace the wires but you can get stuck doing a lot of extra work for nothing. Your problem is most likely the starter, it seems to be fairly common on these cars. You can get a rebuilt unit from just about any parts store. Just make sure you take yours in to exchange so you get the discount.
