Strange noise from front left wheel area

Everytime a make a left turn whether it is sharp or slight, I get a single click noise. I was in the shop a week ago and they told me I have a crack in both front CV boots. Any idea if these issues are related? They said I will get a click, click, click when my CV's need immediate attention. What is this caused from?

yes they are related and depending on your mileage you may need new axles.

I'm having the same problem with my 95 max but on the right front side.. Except I'm getting the "click, click, click" ... Wanted to know what it was before I took it in the shop.. Someone told me it was a tirod end? Whatever the hell that is. But seems to me like it would be the axel or strut? Correction please because i know im probably wrong.

sounds like you need new cv joints. I took my 95 in b/c of the popping click-click-click noise, and asked them to check my cv joints. They said my boots were torn up, and originally said I could get away with just new boots, but then once they had it apart they said I needed new cv joints as well. Spent $900, and now two weeks later the clicking is back, this time I'm thinking it is my ball joints ...

That's what my brother is telling me. He found them for $85 and $115 for the left and right sides respectively. Would I be able to find them cheaper anywhere?

If your boots are bad then FIX THEM NOW with a Nissan factory CV Boot kit otherwise you'll have to replace the whole driveshaft when the CV joint gets damaged from dirt/mud contamination...

Is it a tough job to do? I got instructions from motorvate.com but my brother's worried that it could be a detailed 3-5hr job. He is experienced in this type of repair. He's also suggesting changing the axles.

If your hearing definitive clicking noises when taking turns you will most likely need to replace the axle, when you buy the axles from raxles.com i think its like $300 + core for the front left and right and it includes everything(boots/joints and all so you don't replace just one little peice and still end up having the clicking noise). I have also seen them on ebay for a little cheaper but I opted to get the Raxle ones because they are supposedly more durable.

I know the boots are bad because they told me at the dealer (not that they couldn't be giving me the shaft). I do have 204K on the car, though, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks on the info about the axles all being one set that includes everything. That was my next question.

P.S. I'm only getting a single click noise, not a multiple click.

I also have to change the O2 sensor and I spoke to someone that suggested changing both since I had such high miles. What's your thoughts?

My point is just to make sure and not have to take someone elses word and know for your self because once the boot is torn, dirt and crap get in there. Once it gets in there, it damages the ball bearings in there. Some people get the click only when they turn, I used to get a groaning sound when I slowed down.

As for the 02 sensors, how do you know they were bad? Did you get the light? Its always a good idea when a car has high mileage to change them although not always neccessary. After time the 02's tend to reduce gas mileage as they get old. If your going to do your axles on a lift, do your 02's at the same time, it will save you ALOT of time. Although its not hard to do them in your driveway.

I got the code for the rearbank O2 and was calling oxygensensor.com for prices. Plus, I went to the dealer to have the codes verified. $90 later that's what I need but they want $150 for the part alone. Are they just as reliable from the website, do you know?
Can you tell me what OEM stands for?

I will definitely be changing the axle and CV boots. Since it comes all together in one set, does that also include the joint, or is that something different?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.. bascially a part made by Nissan. If you got the code, then go to www.oxygensensors.com

You can get one for about $60. To make life easier dont get a universal one.. it works the same and is cheaper but you have to cut/splice wires. Get a regular one that plugs in like OEM. Bosch, NGK, Denso are all good brands for 02 sensors.. I believe our original Nissan ones are made by Bosch.

As for the Axle... an axle and cv is the same thing... when purchase one at a local auto parts store or www.raxles.com you get the entire axle with new boots.

Boy, does that clear a lot up. I have truly been enlightened about the axle/CV issue. How stupid to have 2 names. Obviously, I don't make the repairs. Good to know. Thanks for the education!

You can get cv axles at NAPA for $59 plus core charge...don't know if this is nationwide, but it's what I paid in NC. I'd never pay anyone $900 to change two axles...you must have gone to a Nissan dealership because that's a rip-off. I've owned two Maximas & have never had problems with the axles bought from a NAPA store.

Yeah, $65 bucks at autozone for a rebuilt axle here in West Texas. And they keep ya in the computer for warranty purposes.

Thanks guys, for all the suggestions. I think I'm going to replace the whole axle. I might also change the rotors at the same time. I get lots of pulsating when I brake. It annoys me. I like the smooth ride my Maxima gives me. Also looking to change the O2 sensor. Thinking about changing the rear right caliper, too. I think it's locked up on me. I just turned this baby over to 205K on the way to work this morning! I'm on the countup to 300K. Wouldn't that be coooool!

Would you have to get an alignment after replacing the CV axles?

Scribe areas with something sharp for reference points. Then try to put it back where the marks are, if the wheel is off after you need one, chances are you will. Just did mine and it was just a little off, when I saw the numbers it was way off in most areas, so I am glad I did. Just got 4 brand new tires, didn't want to ruin them.

Replaced mine couple of years ago, cost me around 200 bucks all together... But a lot cheaper than paying a tow truck when your cv joints fail and your stranded.

me too!!!

I too paid about $900 for an axle at the dealer. Had the rotors replaced at Sears 3 weeks ago and now I hear the click.click.click when I make a sharp turn (expecially when I accelerate from a full stop). I hear a groaning sound if I turn the wheel all the way to one end when I am stopped. Thought I should check with you guys before I head back to the dealer. I am hoping the repairs are covered under warranty. Otherwise I am looking at another $900. Also, is it possible that the problem is with the steering system?
