Sicne you just registered, I think most won't flame you. There have been tons of threads dealing with this particular subject. I'm just going to try and trim the number of posts by saying - Maximas are very good cars. With the right treatment, it will last you virtually forever. We had a poll on who had the Maxima with the highest mileage, and I think we got 420,000+ miles. What kind of Max is your friend selling? What year, trim, etc.? Just because it looks nice doesn't mean it performs nicely. Let us know..

Does your "friend" have the work history? How long has your friend owned the car?
Has it been in an accident of any consequence?
What kind of miles on it - mostly highway, mostly city, 50/50,
Is it an automatic or a 5-speed?

both highway and city. We live in a small CT town so. Ive known him since i was born. He is 26 now and works at tweeter. Owned the car since he bought it in 97. No accidents ever, no dents. He is asking 11, said hell give it to me for 10,700. Mods: 3" place racing cold air intake, 2.5" stillen y-pipe, 2.5"random technologies hi flow cat, 2.5 apex-i cat back exhaust, unorthodox racing ultralight flywheel, unorthodox racing stage 2 clutch, custom enterprise adjsutable short throw shifter, edibach pro kit lowering springs, tokico blue profermance struts, carbon fiber strut tower, yokaham AVS ES100 tires.he has an alpine media center touch screen lcd in front for head unit, two 6.5 lcds by alpine in each headrest, carbon fiber dash kit, carbon fiber shifter **** ,as well as the ebrake. PS2 stuff. skyline body kit,Moda 18 inch rims, street glows, clear bumper lights, extreme white bulbs, altezzass for rear and front. GTR emblems, blue accent lighting, nissan and nismo should pads. power everything, sunroof. the works and cloth seats.

$10,700 is way too much for a '97 SE with 100K miles on it, but then again, for all those mods, it's about right. The choice is now up to you. Would you rather buy one for $4-5K less and build it up (more fun, more customization), or buy that one for close to $11K and just be done with it?

wow that car sounds great, and yeah, they will last forever if taken care of. Since you know that your friend took great care of it, i say go for it, but dont give him more than 10 for it though. Good luck.

I would personally stay away from modded cars. You think with all those mod's he hasnt been beating the engine? I mean it can look mint, but internally you never know. I wouldnt offer much more than BB value. Aftermarket parts dont really add any value to a car.
But...to answer your question it should last to 150k without problems.

hey bro....all of these guys have great opinions...yes 108,000 miles for a max is nothing....my step Dad had a 1986 max 4 speed went 385,000+ but he hit a deer and it wasnt worth getting fixed...with proper maintance the car will go forever....I agree with p00tan6....buying a modded car isnt such a good idea....the one guy said that he is sure that he did beat on it....and with all those modds im sure he beat on it....which is ok, dont we all....its an advantage that its your friend who is selling the car though....the decision is basically up to you.....but 11 is way to high!....give him 10 at most...maybe even 9500.....but yes you can buy a nice stock 97 or 98 maxima with all the options that you want for 7 to 8 grand with 80,000 miles on it...and then you can decide what YOU wanna do with the car....but maximas go for a LOOONG time...I bought a 98 SE (cleanest car ive ever seen)...80,000 miles-7 grand-absolut mint condition-had it checked buy a mechanic...its your choice....hope this helps....any more question...pm me....o and I almost forgot-most people will not agree with me but everytime you modd a car you are changing the way the engine functions..KEEP IN MIND-an engine that is made by the factory is made to run a certain way....if you change pulleys and all that other stuff, you are changing the way the engine performs which in time will decrease engine life

I havce 178K on the 97 I have now. If it was maintained properly, you can get 300+ out of it no question. The motor and trans in my car are amazing. Not a tap, knock, slip, smoke, nothing. Maintenance is the key. But even with those mods, that car is way too high priced.

I would stay away from the "best friend" type of car. If there's anything wrong with the car, you'll be moaning and groaning. "He sold me a lemon." At the end, there will be a little bit of tension between friendship.
I would recommend a stock car and mod it the way you like it. If the car is pretty much modded, than there's no joy of modding it yourself. Everyone has different taste and I'm sure your friend has different taste also.

yea, 10g's is a little too much, even with those mods. remeber Modifying a car actually DECREASES the value. I would take the 10,700 you were gonna use to buy the car, and go but a used 97 stock, and put the 3-4k that left over into what YOU want done to the car

my 96' has 135K w/ some signs of wear, but overall i think it will go 200+ on the stock motor & trans, that is if I stop beatin on it!! better knock on wood! looks can be decieving so be careful

it always amazes me how people can throw so much cash into a car and keep the stock cloth interior.
that price isn't worth it.
also there is nothign like modding a car the way you want. whenever i would get into that car if i owned it i would feel like it was somone else's. when i get into mine i know there is no other maxima like mine in the states, because of the mods i have done and custom work....which is a nice feeling.
i'm sure the car is really hot though...got any pics of it?

I don't think you should buy a previously modded car from a friend. You know that if it has all those mods, he probably drive it hard. I think you're much better off getting a stock one with more factory options (like leather), spending less and then putting the money you saved into your own custom mods.

I still want to know if the car has a sunroof. I know it has cloth seats, so I suspect it has no sunroof. I wouldn't buy the car without both.
As far as beating on the car is concerned, I am sure he is quite aware as to how the car has been driven.
Has the car been beaten on or not?
One plus, since the car is from a small town it must have mainly highway/rural miles on it.

I would stay away from buying the car for a couple of reasons. First, don't do business with friends....at least not this type of business. If something happens to the car after you buy it you guys could wind up hating each other. Second, $10,700 is waaaaaaaaaaay to high. I agree with another poster....for that kind of money you could go to an auction and buy an '02.
One thing I have learned over the years is that you need to buy a stock car and do the mods yourself. That way you know they are done properly and they are the mods YOU want. Oh, and if you think he hasn't beat the car some then I have some land in the 'Glades to sell you. Everyone beats on their car even if it is just a little bit. Shiny doesn't always mean well taken care of.
As to the life expectancy of a well maintained Max, I would say well over 200K. My 1999 GLE has 159,350 on the clock as of today. I plan on driving her until the wheels fall off. Treat her well and she will treat you well in return.
