hey guys

I had to bring my car in a few weeks ago to the dealership for some things and when they were doin a check up, they said that my power steering pump had a tiny leak in it and the fluid was leaking on the belts which caused them to sqweak. They wanted $1000 to fix it!! $500 for the pump and $500 for labor.
I noticed a wet spot on the rubber boot (not sure what its called) thats on (i think) the axel right below the pump and i noticed that the level of fluid in the tank is going down VERY VERY slowly (Although i might just be seeing things). But i never see any spots on the drive way from leaking fluid. I know this problem is minor at the moment but i know that i am not payin the stealership to do this.

Once in a while the belts will sqweak but i have never noticed any problems in the proformance of the power steering and the decrease in fluid has been very very minor, if any.

Should i go to the junk yard and try to pick up a power steering pump and install it myself? Im sure that it isnt too difficult.
OR
Should i just leave it alone since even if there is a leak it is very very minor and hasnt caused any problems?
OR
Is the power steering pump perfectly fine and the stealership is just after my money?

My cousin's car has an oil leak that seems to be coming from the power steering as well. His mechanic told him that it is a power steering pump leak but when I inspected it, I saw that the oil was actually coming from the rear valve cover and leaking down onto the rear manifold and power steering. I had the same problem with my car about a year ago so check the valve cover before looking for a power steering pump. If it's the valve cover then you would just have to get that resealed with some new silicone.

thanks for the advice, ill be checkin the rear manafold, valve cover and anyother place it could be coming from tomorrow.

power steering is a b!tch to do alone, but any local garage can do it for under 300.
