Hello:

I was thinking about getting a y-pipe in my 98 Max. My question is will my car pass emissions here in California with the y-pipe installed, considering it's a fed spec car?

The car should pass smog as long as the engine is warm, give it a good work out before. The Y-pipe gets rid of the pre-cat, and so when the engine is warm you will get the same emissions as you would with the stock one (from what I have been told). So if it would pass with the stock one it will pass with the aftermarket one as long as the engine is warm.

So it doesn't matter that my car is fed spec and that I'm in California? Thanks for the input!

Well, you have to get it registered in CA, and if it has to be modded to be in the state, that is when they will tell you. . . It really sucks. . . But hopefully they won't make you change anything.

Here's some info

Skimax had to get his car smogged. He failed on first attempt, he got something like 900+ NOx count. The limit was 820 or something like that. Well he went home, installed teh stock Ypipe, came back and had a NOx count of 2. Yes TWO not 200, but just 2. So yeah it makes a big-a$$ diff.

I am not saying that it would definately pass. . . But pretty much everyone who has had a really warm engine, like freeway driveing for at least a half hour before has passed. . . The trick is to go straight from driving to the smog, and that normally doesn't happen, which makes things very difficult.

I'm going to wait

My smog check is due in August of this year. I have the y-pipe and b-pipe ready for installation, but I think I'll get my smog check done first just in case.

I think I'll just stick with the stock y-pipe, I owe it to the environment.
