hard start problems

This just started happening and I am not sure why. If my car has been sitting for awhile (couple of hours) it has trouble starting. The engine will crank and start and rev to 1000rpm and then drop to around 200. At this point it will either catch and start or it will die. Sometimes it revs to 200 back to 1000 back to 200 and then either dies or starts. If my car isn't sitting for that long it starts fine. If its sitting for like only an hour or so the rpms only dip to about 500 instead of 200. I did some searching and it seems that most people had problems with the ECTS but those were cold starts. I just tried starting in 100 degree weather and had the same problem. I doubt its TB cuz I just cleaned that but I could be IACV of PCV. What do you guys think?

keep me updated on that. my problem is that it just takes a long time to crank. sometimes it requires me to step on the gas to crank.

It could still be ECTS.. i had similar symptoms and its a cheap & easy part to replace (just in radiator hose).

It does some weird calculation to workout if the temp is right (via ECTS).

If the ECTS is broken then it will give problems starting hot or cold, as its getting a wrong or out of range reading from the ECTS when it checks engine temp on startup..

mine did they same revs dropping and raising, stalling etc

Yup mine did this business too

You crank it, nothing... crank again.. nothing.. do it again and it fires up.. hitting the gas some times helped.

After I replaced the ECTS the non-starting hasn't happened since.

When I had a similar porblem I took out my starter and regreased it and it fixed the hard starting....the problem was the same in that it happened when sitting a few hours or when cold.

hard start

I have the same problem with starting, I have to give it gas for it to turn, once in a while it will start. ECTS was mentioned what is it? and where is it located? I have a 2003 Maxima SE V6. I am just about to hit 29K so could be a fuel filter replacement on the way?

One more problem, when I place it in reverse, there is noise coming from the front end, sounds like the trans? any ideas? Only in reverse...How about a transmition service? I just got this car 3 months ago, with only 23K, it still smells new. Thanks new guy justlikemoe

I second that. I had the same problem. Changed my fuel filter, no more hard crank, comes right on

I had the same problem, just replace your ignition switch. After that it worked just fine. Starts up in one try no problems at all.
