Electrical problem related to RPMs

Around 3000rpms, my headlights dim, the clock dims and if I turn my turn signal on, my CD player turns off. Alternator was recently replaced, grounds are good. The only thing I can think of is maybe the battery isn't grounded properly as it is now grounded to the trans. Any thoughts?

TTT

I know it's not an intake, y-pipe or LED question but someone's gotta know.

Electrical problems are the worst. My car has had a ton of electrical problems and they have always been the cause of some random little problem.

All I can say is check the fuseable links under the hood, especially the big 120amp white battery link. Also check your relays. The last time I had an electrical problem, some things worked and somethings didnt. It ended up being a lose relay behind the dash next to teh fuse box. The electrical problem I had before that was the fault of a bad battery fuse link. When you take off the fuse box panel inside the car, look inside to the left and you will see a few blue topped relays, make sure they are all secure and not lose. One of mine was lose and my car went crazy.

Also, post your problem http://forums.nicoclub.com/zeroforum?id=23]here, I dont really care much for the NICO boards, but their tech section is really good and they have a lot of very knowledgeable mechanics on there.

Do you have a warranty on that Alternator? Sometimes the remanufactured ones aren't "remanufactured" very well. Or sometimes you get unlucky. The RPM thing really makes it sound alternator related and that would certainly suuck if you just replaced it...

Yup I would have the alternator tested. Run over to wal-mart if they have TLE and they will test it for free.

Do you get any yellow warning lights around that rpm?

Are you saying you only have your battery grounded to the transmission? Definitely add another ground to the body. I'd recommend a good 1" grounding strap. Aside from that, make sure the belt is tight and not slipping once the engine revs up faster. Other than those two things, I can't think of any electrical Gremlins that would be activated/triggered by RPM's unless you have an RPM switch that is activating something.

This was obviously something that arose after the tranny swap??? I can't really say anything that hasn't been said.

Sorry to go OT, but do you have any pictures of your Zaino experience?

I will say it's an Alternator or ground problem.

I have a 96 GLE which had a similar problem.

While driving at slower speeds (no highway) when the brakes were pressed occasionally the CD player, internal lights and the headlights would blink off/Dim for a split second. This continued to get worse over time (happened more often).

Finally, a mechanic diagnosed the problem. I think it was a bad brake light socket. Once that was replaced everything was fine. It was several years ago, so I don't remember the exact details.

Since you mentioned your turn signal, I would say the sockets for that signal are suspect. (You might want to see if the same thing occurs when you put on your hazard lights)

Good Luck!
Rob.

At WOT, e-brake and oil light come on but go away as soon as I let off the gas. And yes, I do have an RPM switch activating my 00VI but that's at 4,800rpms. Steve, I may have to take you up on that. This is bugging me.

does the battery light come on too? i had that problem when i only grounded the battery to the jack post. I now have two grounds (added one to the strut tower) and everything has been peachy since.

I can't recall if the battery light comes on or not. Let's do the ooglie kit this weekend.

The ooglie grounding kit indeed solved the problem. Thank again, Steve.

get a new negative battery cable. Ground it to a few points on the body, engine, transmission, and whatever else you can think of. If that doesn't make it better then get another alternator
