WOO! did my ae mod. BUT!..

well, i finally did the ae mod for my headlights.

just wanted to get those of you who have yet to do it a heads up! my passenger headlight bulb exploded several months back, leaving a nice film all over everything in the headlight, along with a bunch of debris.

when i had the plastic off the assembly, i attempted to clean the blurr film off, with out too much success on the chrome. when i pulled the tape off after the spray paint had dried, in many places, the chrome came sheeting off in flakes!@

the only thing i can blame this on is the headlight explosion. there wasnt a single flake on the driver side when i pulled the tape from that one!

You cant touch the bulb with your bare hands. The oil on your hands causes the bulb to explode.

i didnt touch the bulb. the only thing i can think of that would have caused it is the pidgeon i brained against the headlight at 90 mph. it left a blood smear on my bumper and crammed feathers under the headlight.

and theres no way i can justify spending hundreds of dollars on my headlights.

How long was the bulb in before it exploded? Did you use blue painter's tape or another kind. They sell other color(s) that are less adhesive, so it will not pull old paint off, not saying that was your problem. But that really stinks, I would try and buy one, junkyard, org member if you can't figure out a way to fix it.

flat black tremclad would work wouldn't it? Or Krylon...I think both are high temp, and not very reflective.

OK ok.

The AE MOD is "Aniversary Edition Mod".
This AE MOD is having the black corners painted on headlights/corner lights.

From what i gather this thread is about you ripping off the chrome when you remove the tape correct.?
I've done a few, ill try to help. When you paint the inside portions you can paint almost the Entire Corner of the light. Where you have chrome torn off, I usually paint black there neways. Looks much better. Make you own design edges for the corners now that your this far.

-if the tape sticks, fold the tape back so the stick-side is up(inthe air). put both flat-smooth side of the tape together so ur finger is on the sticky side. push down hard and slide both flat surfaces of tape pulling it off. keep removing finger and placing closer to the edge ur pulling.

*this way you pushing the tape down and making it fold back and it doesnt have the ability to grab a small piece and continue making it bigger.
*many airbrush/auto painters use this to avoid beginning flakes of paint coming off when you remove the tape.

-get cheap tape
-only put them in the oven for 5min @low... tape sticks more when you heat it up.

good luck.
That #2nd Pic you have is the easy corner fix.
For the bigger surfaces you may want to try chrome but its gonna look like junk.... but you "Could" try painting them the body color of your car... Ive seen this on a white maxima and it looked hot. not the entire headlight just the f-up parts ya know.

krylon black gloss is what i use. the write up says flat but that doesnt look as good.

Marron-red with black dusting spray over it looks very good though imo.

Paint kind has never mattered really. But i use 1000 grit sandpaper to get it rough so the paint sticks good.

Just an idea.......

Good chrome paint is very very expensive.. cheaper to buy new headlights.. if tried dupli-chrome on my headlights.. and it sucks... not even close to chrome.. i emailed duplicolor complaining. This was the response I got:

“Chrome paint products can only simulate a finish rather than create an
actual chrome surface. I would expect the Dupli-Color product will perform
in line with most chrome finish paint products. To achieve the actual
chrome, would require rechroming.

The caps used on the Dupli-Color Instant Chrome are produced through a
vacuum metalized system. The paint inside the aerosol cans is made to
approximate this color. Unfortunately we are not able to match these
colors exactly. The Dupli-Color Instant Chrome is the closest color we
offer to a "true chrome" color.

Thank you again for your inquiry. If you have any other questions, please
reply with message history and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Have a great day.

Sincerely,
Ray
Dupli-Color Technical Support”

If you find a reasonable solution please let me know.. I have a pair of headlights I want to redo.
