burn smell, maybe clutch??

1996 maxima se 5 speed 260 000km

when i release the clutch at about 2500-3000 rpm my front wheels squeals.
when i shift from 1st to 2nd gear in hard accelerating , the front wheels squeal again....and even sometimes from 2nd to 3rd....so i "guess" my clutch is fine..

when i'm up to 75-80+mph (wot acceleration) i smell a burned rubber smell.....even when im careful not to lose traction.....the rpm mounts steadily..not like a burnt clutch.....

could it be the clutch anyway....and how would you describe the smell of a slipping clutch???

how may I verify if the clutch is good

It doesnt sound to me like you have a clutch problem. Maybe your brakes?.....if you have a seized caliper.

I have the same problem but mines a 98 auto SE. I also have a humming sound coming from the left front wheel. My brakes are fine also, but I get the burning smell after driving on the highway for more then 10 mins. What could this be?

after you drive for a few miles stop the car and put your hand close to the break pads (DON'T TOUCH THEM) just feel for the heat, if you think you could burn your fingers (or you can feel the heat from 5-10in away) then your breaks are sticking to the rotors.

a slipping clutch, would happen, if you had no squeal of the tires, meaning, you would step on the gas, and the car would not move forward as fast.
conclusion: the clutch is good (IMO from what you told us)
Do the breaks thing.

Of course, the burning smell may not have anything to do with clutch or brakes. It could be a small oil leak dripping onto the exhaust.

I have a 95 auto and at higher speeds I can smell rubber burning.

Is there any way to test if brakes are the problem?

It might be your Rear Calipers. Next time you do 70-80, and you start smelling it. Pull your car over, and go to the rear caliper, and smell it from there.
