HELP with squeaky noise from engine bay after startup

When I start my car.. I usually hear (mostly when it's cool) a squeaking noise that comes from the engine bay. It starts right after the motor turns over and lasts about 1-2 seconds. It's not my belts because I took them off and it still made that noise. I tried to pinpoint the noise and it sounds like it's coming from the driver side of the motor.. around where the tranny and block connect.. I can't really tell, but somewhere around there. It sounds like a car does when the belts are loose, but the tone is a little deeper and more scrapy. Also, I don't have ABS, so it can't be that. If anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it. thx.

njmaxseltd IS THE MAN! I replaced my starter today, and the world is at peace!

If you crank your car, and you can hear the same noise, while it's cranking.. and then the noise peaks right after it starts.. and goes away after about a second or two.. that's exactly what my car did.. and it's the starter.

Okay that didn't make much sense, but if you have the same prob, you'll understand..

Thanks again njmaxseltd

Just an added note for anyone with the same issue, if you have A/C, you can get the same kind of squeak/squeal, it's from the a/c clutch, it usually only lasts for a couple of seconds/minutes until the grease gets around. Starter comment is correct just didn't want anyone to change the starter thinkin that was the problem only to find out the money was wasted...

I have the same problem. I had it with my 94 SER too. It was fairly typical on the SER. I think it was a bearing in the starter. My maxima has been making the noise for about a year and many thousands of miles. I don't think its a terminal problem for the starter and it has not gotten worse over time. It sounds bad though.

I had the same problem with my '97 Maxima. You need to replace your starter.

Mine does it the whole time the car is running and gets louder when pressing on the gas. I thought it might of been the power steering but i dont know. It really sucks to drive while its whinning!

If it's more of a whinning/humming sound rather than a squeaking sound and it is coming from the passenger side, it could be your alternator. Mine was doing this and I replaced the alternator and the sound went away and hasn't returned. Check this thread for more info. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....t=sound+engine

Good Luck.
