Manual Tranny fix

my clutch pedal resistance point has been dropping pretty low to the floor from time to time. i have narrowed it down to bad hydraulics - master/slave cylinders. is there are sticky on how to R&R master/slave clutch cylinders? I couldnt find one.

-Thanks!

I've never done either on the Maxima, but I have on several other cars. There really isn't a good way to decide which of the two is malfunctioning. However, you might want to keep an eye on your fluid level.

If you are not losing fluid, you should should examine your clevis (the threaded block behind your clutch pedal. Make sure it is tight. And change the fluid. If the probably still persists, then change your master cylinder. One of the seals is bad and the fluid is being rececyled.

If you are losing fluid, try to find out where it is coming from. Master cylinders fail more often than slave cylinders do (on most cars), due to the simplicity of a slave cylinder compared to the master cylinder.

Did you even check the fluid level? you might just have a leak at the two lower rubber lines.

yeah, the level drops periodically. i add brake fluid, then usually, after a day or two the problem stops and the clutch feels normal. in a few weeks, the problem comes back. I am going to look at the lines when i am down there. i ordered both cylinders anyway, in case those are the problem.

thanks. i was looking for some info, since i have never done this

New lines and cylinders is a wise choice. Never money wasted.

Installing new slave and master is pretty easy. You might want to pick up a set of flare nut wrenches for the lines.

That's a really good point. Just because a tubing nut is 10 or 12mm, doesn't mean it will loosen properly with a regular 10mm wrench. Get the flare nut wrench, and don't risk the hell of rounding off the nuts.

the slave cyl comes out with 2 bolts
the master come out with two bolts in the engine bay and then you have to remove the pin from the clutch petal and it slides right out. dont forget to remove the cotter pin fron the clutch pin b4 trying to pull the clutch pin out.

The clutch master cylinder is not too hard but you will need some patience for this job. Getting at the bolts is kind of tricky, you will have to remove that part right next to the master cylinder for more room to work with. I'm not sure what it's called but it is bolted through the wheel well with 2 10mm bolts I think.
