Losing O/D?

I'm having a problem that I think is transmission related. When I'm going up a slight incline at freeway speeds, the engine will shift from O/D into 3d (it goes up to about 3500 RPM from the normal 2500 or so) and then back down. It may bounce back and forth a few times before I get fed up and turn O/D off. With the O/D off, the car runs fine, with no trouble staying in the proper gear. I've changed the tranny fluid and filter (twice, for the fluid), and that didn't help. It usually doesn't happen until the car is warm.

Does this sound like an O/D issue, or maybe a general tranny problem? The only O/D type I can find in the manual is the O/D switch on the shift lever, but I don't think that's the problem, if only because the O/D Off light doesn't go on while this is happening (but it does if I take it out of O/D). Any other ideas?

Thats what auto's do, they gear hunt on hills and such sometimes. It dosent bother me much.

Thats why the O/D off button is there, so you can lock out the O/D gear and reduce the gear hunting.

Those new CVT transmissions are supposed to remedy this.

Yeah, I get that at lower speeds on hills, but this is different. It's a lot worse, and it didn't happen before. (My wife even noticed it--that's how bad it is <g>.)

Thanks, nmex, I needed the technical term.

Someone on another thread said to try taking it out of O/D and flooring it around 45 mph. If it kicks down, it's probably just a solenoid. I tried that, and it kicked down. So that's what I'll be looking at next.

When we get the car back from my wife's nephew...
