I tried looking at past threads, maybe I overlooked it, but I have a 96 Max and want to put the home link visor in so I dont have to deal with a bulky remote. Do I need anything for the install besides the visors from a 97-99? Is it just giving power to the transmitter all I need to do?

 

The HomeLink on 4th gens doesn't work with current code scanning garage door openers, just to let you know. To get that to work, I'm pretty sure you need to get one of those rearview mirrors with the new HomeLink transmitter built in. I've seen them for about $250. The HomeLink in 5th gens (at least in '02+ I know for sure) does work with the new style openers. I don't know if you can adapt a 4th gen visor to use the 5th gen HomeLink.

we just bought a new garage door opener from sears and my homelink works fine. Depending on which route is cheaper you could do visor+garageopener or mirror. Maybe your garage opener is alreadyt old style that could work with the old homelinks

 

works with mine as well if you look at the instruction page if will tell you how to program for "rolling codes"

 

The card in my owner's manual explains all that (about rolling codes), but it has never worked. I can't even get it to program in the first place (the red light won't ever stop blinking slowly). I've got a newer Genie garage door opener with Intellicode. My old Genie worked fine.

One other thing I noticed, is that the red light on my 5th gen has a little house around it (the HomeLink symbol), but my 4th gen's light doesn't (there's no little house symbol anywhere on my visor). Maybe some cars came with programmable RF sunvisors without HoneLink?

 

The installation is EXTREMELY easy. I think the homelink works off the mirror light. It is just plug and play.

So, to Chicken-n-Rice, if you go junkyardin' for a 4th gen HomeLink visor, make sure you get one with the little house symbol on it. My 1997 SE doesn't have it and buttonhook's 1997 SE does. You definitely want the one with the house symbol.

It's probably another one of those things that you get with the leather package (I have cloth).

And to make it work I wire it just like the lights within the mirrors? Sounds easy.

 

I have the homelink with the house symbol on my 99 SE... except I have no use for it. I have the tan cloth interior... I guess if it's that big a deal, I'd swap for a non-homelink one, and some cash, or whatever.

 

You might have to mess around with the garage door motor to get the homelink to work on the visor. I had to have my dad sit in my mom's 6th gen while I pushed on buttons on the garage door motor to get homelink to program. My house is only about 4 years old, so I didn't understand why the remote wouldn't work.
