When Is Inner Tie Rod Replacement Necessary?

I have searched the forums for a while and cannot find clear guidance on when the inner tie rods should be replaced.

Does anyone know what to inspect for this particular part?

I am trying to complete a suspension overhaul and am debating on whether to replace the inner tie rods when I replace the ball joints and outer tie rods. Most suspension parts resources consider a suspension overhaul to only include the outer tie rods and ball joints.

Advice and guidance requested. Thank you. -Sloppy

When it becomes very loose and you can feel play in the steering rod.
If it aint broke, leave it alone.

I am assuming that I should check for inner tie rod play after I install the outer tie rods and ball joints? Or does it matter? It seems that I would need to know that the "outer" hardware is tight first, correct? Thanks.

No, if you must, disconnect the hub side and then grab the tie rod and push/pull twards the rack to feel for any play in the inner joint.
You should be able to feel and determin play from the outter or inner end without taking anything apart. Get the car up on a lift.

Thanks njmaxseltd. I'll put it up on the lift tonight or tomorrow and check it as you have suggested. Thanks. -Sloppy

Another thing to consider:

When the play in the inner tie rod is small, it will be most noticeable because the amount of effort required to rotate the tie rod in its socket gets very small. A new tie rod requires a wrench to rotate it, IIRC.
