Sunroof...

Hey anyone else have this problem?
The metal edge around the glass in the sunroof is rusted and I'm sure it's gonna start leaking pretty soon. I phoned the local nissan dealership and 1000 bux plus for a new glass insert.
what the hell?
I talked to some junkyards and I can get the whole assembly, but the courier will NOT insure used glass during transport, so if it breaks, I"m up **** creek with no paddle.
anyone have any suggestion that are cheaper?
thanks .org

there maybe shops in the area that do sunroof that can do it for way cheaper than the stealership. here in MD (on of the higher cost of living state) it cost like $400 to install a sunroof on a non-sunroof vehicle, so i would hope that the same shop can fix the problem for less or just pay for a whole sunroof installation and have them do a new sunroof

Maybe if you take out the unit and see if you can recondition the metal part in some way??
The rebuild kit doesn't come with any trim pieces tho...

get some sandpaper, smooth it out, get the rust off, since u say its not leaking yet, that means there is still good metal underneat hthe rust,

after u sand it down paint it several coats of some good black paint, i never done this but it seems like a good idea,

i bet they salt the roads like crazy in Edmonton cause u guys get lots of snow, here in Toronto its the same thing, lots of salt, but NO SNOW, haha

thats true u would have a cleaner look if it was just replaced, but we all know how much that can cost, plus besides, how many people actually see the sunroof ?

yeah, I'm gonna have to check with some of the glass shops in town to see what the $ is gonna be like. Thanks everyone.
I'm sure that if I were to sand it down, it would just be in the same sit. in a year or 2 or three. I would have to take the sunroof out to do that and then put it back in. I might as well just replace it with an aftermarket one at that point.

I just noticed that exact thing yesterday after work. My plan is to peel back the plastic, sand off the rust then seal it with some black rustproofing paint. My rust, incidentally is on the front end on the underside. This should cost no more than $15 dollars.

i got a friend of mine to pick up the whole assembly for me about $200 and $150 for the labor, he works for nissan. what happen with mine was that the clip that holds the sunroof cover in place broke off and messed up the track causing the roof to not close properly. for a while a had a piece of wood tucked in there to make an even seal to keep water out during rainy days. like someone else said find a place that does sunroof and see if they can get the part used for you. good luck.
