Loosened Belt

I was getting a mean squeal from my alternator belt all winter long. Today my battery died and I was forced to mess with them. I went and got another battery and after I installed it I loosened my pulley and got no squeal at all. Would doing this earlier prevented my battery from going to hell? I've had the car for almost a year and have changed the alternator already.

im sure it played a role but why get buy a 60$ battery, when you could replace a 15$( for the best kind) belt its not that hard i mean i could give you a walk through
