i recently installed tokico blue struts/shocks with lowering spring, at the same time i put in a pacesetter catback, but i ran across a problem, my over-axle pipe is really close to the axle and on bumps they come in contact and make a noise. i was wondering if anyone else has came across this problem and what they did to fix it. thanks

Hey there,
I just bought a automatic '97 GXE a few weeks ago. The car's got 200k KMs on it (I'm in Canada, we track distance in Kilometers, eh?). I've got very little mechanical aptitude. (I can change my own oil, if the previous technician wasn't a jerk and over-torqued everything). I'm looking to keep the car looking good and in factory condition. I've little interest in doing non-factory modifications and no interest whatsoever in ricification. I found a rare gem for those looking for a daily commuter car : a black maxima with an automatic transmisison that IS NOT beat to ****.
I can't quite figure out what options are on the car. The car has MOST of the features of the Security & Convenience package, but not quite all of them. Also, the car has no ABS. (How the hell does someone buy a not-cheap-beater car in Canada without ABS?!)
Anyways, I've got a few questions for the more experience members of this forum. I just put some new tires on, and it's drifting a bit, so it's time for a wheel alignment. Before I get that done however, I'd like to refresh the factory suspension, as that requires an alignment anyways.
I'm looking to buy parts from courtesyparts.com and have them installed by a local mechanic. First, I'd like to know if I can buy shocks/struts for the SE model and have those installed. Second, what parts specifically do I need to buy? Any additional joints, springs, covers, fasteners, anything like that?
Also, if anyone can recommend a competent garage in the Lower Mainland area of Vancouver I'd be much obliged.
My car has a factory CD player installed, but it does not have the BOSE label on the tape door. It doesen't sound as nice as the BOSE system does either. Except for the tape door however, this unit appears IDENTICAL to the BOSE headunits I've seen. What are the differences between a BOSE system and what's in my car? If practical, I'd love to upgrade. I'm hoping it's just the speakers, and that the headunit and wiring harnesses are electrically the same thing. That would be easy.

The bose system is great, but you're really limited to what you can do with it unfortunately.
Your best bet would be to get a nice aftermarket stereo from eBay and a speaker system from your local best buy or car audio store.

- Only happens while braking
- Creaking sound occurs with each turn of the tire at that pace
- Does not happen while braking in reverse
- New pads and rotors (noise before and after install)
- Usually goes away after driving for awhile (by the time I get to the shop it's gone). Shop checked it out: dust shield, etc, seems fine.
- No noise when spinning the free wheel on a lift.
Any ideas? Maybe the wheel hub? Thanks.
FYI, replacement of the right front wheel bearing and hub fixed this problem. ~$450 at the shop. Hopefully this information may help someone out there in the future...Originally Posted by anam

Is there a difference in cat-backs between 95/96 and 97-99. I didnt think there was but when looking at exhausts online i see some sites categorize the 4th gen into those years.
if someone could just pm me the answer quick thatd be great. i dont check this thread much and didnt think this question was worth its own thread

Quick question.
My BOSE system no longer works. Shortly after I bought the car, the speakers would cut out during the music and start popping and cracking loudly even if the volume was all the way off. After a week or two of this, they stopped working and haven't worked ever since.
What's wrong with it? I've been wanting to fix it but I have no idea what part(s) to buy.

I have a 96 maxima GLE, 135 K miles everything stock. Recently had a freak accident and was hit buy an axe ! when driving at 45mph. It busted the radiotor & condensor. Without noticing the damage I was driving the engine "hot" for 15 min and came to a stop after I found smoke coming from hood.
Fixed the radiator & condensor and everything was fine until a couple of weeks before. When I start from a STOP light, the engine was hesitating and RPM was flicking between 2000 & 2200 and no power on my gas peddle. I rolled to a stop, took it to a near by nissan dealer. They kept it for 5 days and could not figure out what is happening, since CPU was not telling anything wrong with the car. They test drive and nothing happens. Next day when I take it in a 55deg morning the car does the same thing of the lights. In the afternoon when the temperature was say 85deg. there is no stalling. I test drove a 265hp new accord, thinking of trading in my maxima but its pick up sucks.... I want to revive my maxima back ... Any help will be appreciated....

just finished putting my system in today. 2 pioneer 12"s and 1800watt amp.
i have dynamat completely covering the trunk lid
i've taken all the trunk release mechanisms out and rapped them in dynamat and put over whole area (poking holes for screws) (top/lip and bottom)
i stopped license plate rattle with just a little strip of it in the middle on the backside of the plate and screwed it on with 4 screws
things still rattling very bad are spoiler and something intensely freaking out underneath seeming to come from the driver side betw wheel well and bumper, i guess the only thing i can do to get rid of that is to dynamat the whole trunk floor including spare well which sucks because i don't have that much (alternative suggestion would be nice)
my spoiler is kinda loose on one side, i'm thinking maybe just tighten it down , but i don't know how you tighten a snap, do you just get new snaps and if so where?
something thats really been bothering me isn't rattle related at all, its the middle seatbelt, which is contained in a white box hanging down from the deckboard. if i could just shave this off an inch, it would let me push my enclosure back like 8 more inches giving me a lot more trunk space, any suggestions on best way to do this?

Hi everyone, newbie here. I've put in too much $$$ to fix my car, so I figured now would be a good time for a DIY. I have a '97 with approx 115k, and I could tell a while ago that it would take a little longer and a little longer for it to start. Then recently, it almost sounded like my battery was dying just trying to start up (my battery is fine). Now, it doesn't start at all. No noise...nothing. I'm assuming it's the starter. Anybody think it could be anything else? If it's the starter, I still have a question. I found this link on this forum:
http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/516
Is this the starter? Because when I google 1997 Maxima starter, I get parts that look like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-S...spagenameZWDVW
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Okay, here's the deal. I swapped vq30de to my maxima,it was vq20de before, and at the same time automatic to manual. So,now when I try to start the car,it cranks well, fires up,then dies after about a second. Engine light is also blinking, but I think its because of the automatic ecu. Any ideas how to get the car running?

I live in Europe, thats why. Don't know about vacuum leaks,It's quite hard to listen as I don't have any muffler placed yet, just the downpipe. Sensors should be placed properly, guess I have to double check. Is it possible this happens because of the automatic ecu?Quote:

Anybody? My car won't even make a noise at this point when I try to start it. Nothing cranks or anything. I've searched this forum, but couldn't find anything concrete to this point. Could it be the ignition switch instead of the starter?

Hello. My 98 I30 makes a fairly loud scraping noise when I turn left or right. The noise quiets down a lot when I straighten the wheel back out, though. The scraping isn't continuous, it's a pulsating noise that changes with speed. Also, the car starts to shake a bit around 70. Faster than that, it actually smooths out a bit, but at the right speed it gets pretty bad.
I had an awful continuous scraping noise from the back that ended up being wheel bearings, but this noise doesn't sound like that.
Thanks.

From my rather limited experience, that actually sounds like a tire balance issue. You should check to see if the little silver weights on your wheels are actually there. If one of more came off, then it could cause the imbalance that you appear to be describing!Originally Posted by scrubnick

Also have a question of my own... I own a 99 maxima GLE 170k mi w/ only weapon-r intake mod. Great shape inside and mechanical. Its fun to drive and i enjoy it, but as with many people, i always want more!! I know turbo kits exist but i'm not made of money, so what i'd like to know is what you experts think the most cost-effective upgrades would be!
I've seen mention of the warpspeed y-pipe and hi flow cat, as well as headers, short ram, new mufflers etc. the ypipe seems decent but how much performance gain can i get from that? Also, any recommended brands of HID refit kits? I'd love to do that too!
Thanks for any possible help!

Hello all. I have a 97 GXE, auto, no ABS, about 140K. Last week I was out of town and my car threw a SES. I had it read and it gave me P0170 fuel inj sys lean bank 2 and front O2 sensor bank 2 malfunction. I thought this was odd becaus when I first got the car I got the same O2 sensor code, replaced it and it ran fine for about 6 months. So, when I got home I replaced the O2 sensor again. The car ran OK for about a day then the P0170 code came back. It runs very rough and misses all through the RPM range, especially 1k-1.5K. I can hear a popping noise coming from the IACV. I also smelled exhaust gas. SO, I replaced both gaskets on the IACV, also I replaced the exhuast gaskets that go to the EGR guide pipe that runs from the intake manifold to the EGR system. After replacing everything it still runs the same with the same code. I have been told it can be a MAF or an intake leak. I have sprayed every possible gasket surface with injector cleaner to trace the leak and have found nothing. Does anyone here have any ideas? Thanks.

do some research man. There is a lot of info on this already. All over the place actually. Y-pipes give around 20hp but more likely that much with new headers. Dyno info shows that the y pipe and header combo give about 20hp. There is no dyno info on y-pipe alone. HID kits, go on ebay. Do more research if you want to know power gains mods.Originally Posted by ajbell11

Thanks for the y-pipe info! As for the HID, I've already browsed ebay, but have seen a wide variety of products at a diverse price range. Some of them are "no name" brands but might be perfectly good. I was hoping that some of you had perhaps tried them so i could gain the benefit of experience. Also, do you think it is worthwhile to refit with a projector assembly, or would just refitting the bulb work well?Originally Posted by Cdg2125
