Tranny leaking....
Well i bought a 99 5spd max that was swaped to a 5spd by tilley from a guy on the org. 2 days after i get the car i notice a small puddle under my car, i look under it and theres small drips gathering at the bottom of the catch pan (broznish goldish squarish plate) now hearing tilley did the swap, i assumed it would be fine, especially if it was done 15k ago. So now im starting to worry where its coming from, tranny seems to be good no hollowing or anything. I have not put it on a lift yet to see where its coming from but im hoping it was a bad seal when they were puttin the trans together and the oil is sweating thru around the sealent. Any body elsi have any idea what it can be w/o lookin at the car i kno its hard to say.

Check for a leak around the driver's side axle seal.
You possibly need a new seal, but given the replacement didn't happen all that long ago, I question whether this is the problem.
Also check for play in the drive axle. Hopefully you aren't going to experience the dreaded differential carrier bearing problem.

- Trannys with bad bearings usually don't have gold fluid. It's usually black from being saturated with bearing grit and even if the oil is changed it almost immediately gets dingy due to the remaining stuff inside. While looking at the drips outside is hardly a way to see what's going on inside, at this point it's the only info available.
- There are places on the tranny other than the axle seal where oil can leak from, particularly if the last person to change the oil used the position sensor to change the oil. (It's real easy to nip the o-ring or crack the housing of that sensor and create a slow leak). Try cleaning the whole area with oil on it and see if you can figure out where it's originating.
- What is this catch pan you're referring to? Maybe I'm just tired but I don't recognize that part by name.
- I may have rebuilt the tranny in your car. If that is the case I will help support you as best as I can.

i dont understand how the axle seals work. I have a leak that seems to be coming from there, and its not necessarily easy to just add fluid to a manual tranny.
I bought brand new axle seals from nissan and they were metal and i was having such a hard time putting them in that i ended up destroying the rubber around them and put the old ones (which seemed to be all plastic) back in there.

It's a rubber lip molded onto a metal 'can'. The can may be covered in rubber as well. There is a coil spring inside the seal lip that keeps it pulled snug against the rotating shaft. There is no plastic involved. Normally the seal is made from black rubber called NBR, but if it's brown it's probably Viton (better).
They need to be driven in squarely in the bore. This can be tricky, but it's very important.

dave,
This tranny was put in a bit over a yr ago by tilley. The plate imtalkign about if u look rite in fornt of the flexpipe there like this bronzish goldish plate well box, im guesisng it a catch pan for some sort of oil. The oil drips down the side of it, the oil seems to be brownish but clear not smudgy or bad.. i have no hollowing in any gears, some gears r hard to get in 3rd especially.....kind of grinds...
also my friend has 2 trannys 5spd trannys laying around i dunno if u want them or not?
also do u have a contact number if u did rebuilt the trans?
