I was just replacing the rotors and the brake pads on my maxima and after when I took it out for test drive it sounded like a click or even sounded like a low thud against the rotor. When i got out and look at the wheel, i could see little bit of smoke coming out.

I accidentally broke off one of the screw 19mm screw that goes on torque member.

Here is the picture of the screw.




The one i am talking about is the one that the wrench is on. Is it ok if i replaced it with another one from home depot? Please let me know.

Another question is the clip that goes on the brake pad came off is that ok? or do i need to buy another set of pads?


ALSO ANOTHER ISSUE WAS THE EDGE OF THE NEW ROTOR SEEMED TO BE CURVING A BIT THROUGH THE TORQUE MEMBER. THE EDGES WERE TURNING BLACK A LITTLE BIT as if it was burning (this is after the test drive)

how the hell did you break off that bolt with that little ratchet. it is ok to replace it but how did you break it off? you gotta get the left overs off there then replace with new one.

the clip is not needed. if the clip is the dinky metal clip that goes into the holds of the pads.

i dont understand what your trying to state in the last question. a new rotor should be straight as an arrow and not curve.... thats as far as i can tell u

 

lol it wasn't a ratchet i used my torque wrench. TOO MUCH POWER ON THE WREnch.

 

Home DePOT dosent have metric, find a ACE Hardware, WTF were you torquing too 200ftlb????

 

Home Depot DOES have metric. I would check the autopart stores/specialty bolt stores and see if they have any strong bolts that you can buy.

 

ok that's fine but what about the smoke smell? it's coming from the rotors like something is rubbing off it. Do you think i should've cleaned the rotor with alcohol before installing it?

 

Prob some stuff on the new pads/rotors that need to be worn off. Give it a few miles.

I think homedepot only carries grade 2 bolts which are real cheap metal. You need a bolt that is grade 8 minimum. Try boltdepot.com

But the name says it all, HOME, not the AUTO depot, Ace or specialty bolt I, bought a 12x1.25 for my VW at Ace and the have all kinds of Metric hardware in stock,

 

If you didn't clean off the rotors first, there's your problem. They all ship with a grease/oily coating to prevent rust during shipping/storage, usually one cleans them up with brake parts cleaner before installation.

if you broke off the bolt then more than likely you snapped it because you turned it the wrong way. you must replace the entire caliper on that side now. and smoke is normal from new pads if you go hard on them

 

If you snapped off the bolt you'll need a new torque member bracket and the bolt. Also if you tried to drive with this bolt missing you'll notice that the bracket will start moving and dragging on the inside of your rim.

ok cool thanks dragon. I went to autoze and they didnt' ahve it iether. i'll do just that. I only snapped off the bolt, i was able to get the second piece of the bolt out. I've put a similar bolt on right now but the head is smaller, but i'm going to to nissan to pick up this bolt today.

 

Why would be need a new bracket and why would he need a new caliper? All he did was snap a bolt.

 

i originally thought he snapped the 14mm off used for pad change. in that case he woulda needed a new caliper or at least the bracket end of it
