Replacing antenna mast

Replacing antenna mast
I bought a new antenna mast through eBay, but I couldn't figure out how to remove the old one. I can't remove the metal cap that hold the mast in place. Is it a snap-on cap? or screw-type cap?
How did you remove it?
Also, when replacing the new one, does the "teeth" of the new mast face toward the back of the car or front? The old one was already came out (previous owner forgot to lower it in a drive-through car wash), so I don't have any references.
Thanks.

If portion of the old whip is still in the antenna housing, you will have to open the house to get the tail out.
The metal cap has two small notches on the inside diameter. Use a pair of needle nose or "C" clip pliers to remove the cap. Most often it will come off by hand of a pair of regular pliers.
