Coming back looking at 95-99 5-Speeds

Well im getting out of my DD neon (98 5-speed just put clutch/belts in it) gonna sell for $1xxx and I want to get another car (with power windows and such).. and speed next to the neon and good gas mileage.. so I came to either a Grand Prix GT or the Nissan Maxima (5-speed) am I correct these run 15's with a 0-60 in the 7's?

I bought a 94 maxima for 500 and sold it to a friend for like 2600 earlier this year so I already know a little about the engines and such but besides that what am I looking for on these cars for problems??

I'm looking to drop around $2,500 maybe alittle more i know these engines will go well over 200k im probably gonna end up driving it for another 30k me and my dad got a lift so maint isnt a issue really.. Most of the car's im seeing are 2,700-3,500$ with 120k-190k on the clocks all GXE's except a GLE high mileage what do the GXE's have in terms of options?

GXEs are the entry level.. As far as options go they all have pw/pdl ect... some like my Max came with the security/convince package so I have a power drivers seat, visor mirrors are illuminated, a variable speed wiper control, and I have factory keyless entry. Its possible but very rare to have a GXE with a factory BOSE sound system.. Not sure about a sunroof on a GXE though..

You should wait and look for a good deal.

I'm getting a 97 GXE for 90% sure on Monday. The guy is holding it for me.
He'll give it to me for $1000.
Already has a lot of mods - lip kit, stage 3 clutch, intake, exhaust, shocks, injectors, strut bars - front and rear, rear sway bar, clear corners, clear tails, shaved moldings, grill.
5 speed of course.

All it needs is a new paint job, because he shaved the moldings, debadged it, and removed the spoiler, so theres some bondo and a lot of primer.

Seems to be a steal to me, hopefully theres nothing wrong with it. Ran great when i tested it.

Bought mine a year ago for 2900 with 180K (98 SE 5spd)
Now it has 210K, on stock motor/tranny/ replaced stock clutch at 197K..

If u want something luxury with power, i'd look at a SE
GXE's to me look plain.. BUT u can still convert a GXE into a SE...

Bring an obdII scanner with you , I betchya $20 it has a knock sensor code..... Make up some bs about how hard it is to replace ad how much a shop would charge and how expensive the knock sensor is...... Look for a leaking water-pump from the upper-oil pan/crank pulley area, make up some bs about how hard it is to remove the motor mount and mini timing covers and replace the water-pump driven by the timing chain......... Check for input shaft bearing noise and leaky drivers-side axle seal, make up some bs about how notorious these cars are for trannsmission bearing failure and how a rebuild kit=$280 and that doesn't even count the labor to remove/install tranny and rebuild the thing with proper shimming....... Point out the rotted out core support and y-pipe flex section and make up some bs about, oh wait, you live in texas you lucky bastahd

are you able to offer $3k for it? did you test drive it / carfax / inspect it yet? and i would definitely try to go with an SE unless it absolutely isn't possible... on a side note a buddy of mine has a 2000 grand prix gtp with about 94k on it... sitting in the yard, blown head gaskets, cracked block, i think something about leaking coolant into the oil or something... what a spectacular waste of money

i agree 100% on buying an se

i have a 98 se and my gf who knows very little about car saw a gxe on the road today and asked me if it was a 3rd gen maxima cuz it looked ugly compared to mine. i said it was very base( no fogs, cloth seats) so if you want a car that looks good and feels more comfortable get the se

also everyone is knocking pontiac and the grand prix. craking the block and having a head gasket blown could also have to do with the way the person drives it. my uncle ownes a 40th ani gtp with over 120k km on it and has never once had a major repair he couldnt do himself

don't take it the wrong way, i'm not ripping on other makes, i'm just saying that as maxima owners i think we are pretty well off compared to a lot of other car owners when it comes down to the overall quality and reliability of the vehicle

That's odd that you say that, because today I had my first official street-race in the 4.5gen, and it was a grand-prix, I laughed that he was messing with me, so I dropped it into 3rd and pulled on him, but suprisingly his car was very impressive and I didn't pull on him anywhere near where I thought I would have, I think If I was pre-swap he would have taken me ever-so-slightly or it would have been dead even.

Good luck finding a 4th gen for that kind of money. the 5spd trans has issuses ... as i am finding out. things to keep in mind are not the trim level necisarily ... all have the same VQ30DE engine - stock 190hp. so .. depends on the options really .. do you want leather, sun roof, spoiler, rims .... so on and so on. if you are so concerned about a car that will pull well in a 1/4 mile run or null to 60 very quick, spend your money on another car. Maxz are a luxuary sedan then a sports car. the chasis is not set up like a sports car unless you get some good SFCs. even then ... it's not like it was made for the track. (although it's a hella lotta fun on the track )

i guess my moral is, it all depends on what you want out of it and what you're willing to put into it.

Cheers! G'luck mate!

Comparing the Max to the Gt, theres no doubt the Max is the choice based on reliability and value. On that 98 you found w/ 154k thats a reasonable price comp. to cars in this market, but id say 3300-3500 is all hell go. Auction value is about 2000-2200 'clean' If he clears a G hell be happy. 3K plus tax title is a good offer.

If youre going to offer someone, a good suggestion is to bring maybe $3500, depending on how much you want the car.

Just say, ill give you $3000, and pull the cash out and stick it in front of his face.

Its hard to say no to 3 grand in your face. If he says no, then you can add more or whatever.

I'd stay away from 95 because they have to be tail sniffed every year or 2

If you want, I'll sell you my mint unmolested '99 SE-Limited with 101k, 5speed, leather, sunroof, Bose and 16's for $5900. Clean Carfax, no paint work ever, and as I mentioned never modified. Start with something nice to begin with, your life will be easier.

my best friend drives a 99 gtp and he loves it...130k and no probs he also has some mods in it new pulley, computer, intake, tranny cooler, etc...ppl usually complain that mods kill that car..anyways i have a 99 se-l and love that car as well..150k on it and it drives great/is comfortable..if i had to pick id go with the max just bc japanese cars are better built....plus they are prob a little cheaper and you can avoid major repairs like superchargers, etc

The 5spd trans has bearing issues .... infamous problem. The input shaft bearing and the differential carrier bearings tend to wear quickly, probalby due to shimming in the trans ... but I can't say for certain that is why mine is bad yet - need to rebuild first. My 5spd make noise ... not the healthy kinda sortta noise you like to hear, but the kind that tells you - $hits about to break mate! lol

Some of the signs of the problems are of course ... leaks, by then you are up a river for the most part, rebuild shoulda been done by then ... the spinning noise from the bearings rubbing metal on metal, the carrier bearings get pitted from overstress and too much pre-load ... and the hard shifting from the build up of shavings and teflon (or what ever they made the cap seals out of) gumming up the shift points. Not trying to say "don't" get a 5spd .. but these are things to look for - be aware of when getting a maual vs auto.

As for the GTP ... road noise is higher, doesn't handle as well (IMHO), not as stylish, and it's American so we know it can't take corners .. eh mates!?! Really .. it is up to the buyer ... beauty is in the eye of the driver ... or sumtin like that! lol

p.s. ... sorry to jack ur thread mate!
