What's the top speed anyone has reached in there 99 Max. I can't seem to get my 99 SE auto over 120 - 125 MPH. I have every mod available except a supercharger. I thought these could go 140 stock. Does anyone know if the '99 had a governor or a fuel shut off? Thanks for the help! - Kevin

I got an automatic 97 SE (fully mechanically stock; only 80% cosmetic customized) and did 130 mph @ 5500 rpm with two adults in front, two kids in the back, and a trunk full of loaded suitcases and bags.

From what I understand autos all have a speed limiter programmed into the ECU.

140 MPH at any time i want

I have a '95 max and it goes to 140 whenever i want it to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The thing is that '95-'96 are faster than the '97-'99 because they are much lighter.

I have a 98, but this may relate to you. When I just boguth my car used, I guess the previous owner didn't quite have the passion for the Maxima as I did. I took it for a top speed run and couldn't get it past 120-125. This on a 5 speed SE!! I did some minore maintenance to see whats up.

Found the culprit: fuel filter. Once I changed that, my baby charged right up to 140!! Boooya!!

I guess with these 4 valve engines of today, their feul thirst above 3000 rpms must be intense, so any starvation from the feul system, like a clogged feul filter, would adversely affect the top end.

Hope this helps.

No, smaller wheels. Not emmissions, not weight. Smaller wheels. That's it.

Huh for some reason my max weighs under 2900lbs?! it has no problem redlining in fourth it smashes against rev limiter at around 130 .When shifting into 5th it surges forward ive been almost at 140 but im too afraid to keep the pedal down, i think my car will hit around 150 .
With 15 inch alloys a max is faster and lighter.

RE: Speed Limiter...

From what I understand the speed limiter is set at 131 MpH. However, I do not believe this can be performed normally. I believe this can only be performed without a driver (after all, tesing is done without a driver). The top speed capable (without limiter) is actually over 140 MpH. I believe the track tested speed without limiting has a high of 142 MpH. Just to show you the Maxima has more than expected .

I hit about 150, but without seeing any problems from the ECU, I have an S/C, Y-pipe, Catback, Valvebody Mod. I think if you had enough room you could get going faster, my car accelerates slowly from 125-135 but after that it pulls harder to around 150, I don't know for sure because the Speedometer runs out at 140. The pin started to cover up the corner of the Digital Odometer. So I am guessing that it was around 150.

That's probably the 5th gens, there are MANY auto 4th gens that have climbed to 140, not 131.

I have a 95 GXE auto with the C&C package and I have a speed limiter.

Well, I had a speed limiter. I have gone just a little under 140 so far without it.

I'm starting to think that the Speed Limiter is a random thing, some have it, some don't.

Preach on, brother!

That's what I've been screaming. The only way to know for sure if you have a limiter or not on your GXE is to try it and see what happens.

Well, I've been screaming that and "O/D off does nothing but lock out 4th gear!!!"

Top speed

This is what I've always thought;

the speed limiter is determined by one thing and one thing only, what type of tires came on your car from the factory. If you got H rated tires, no limiter. If you got s rated tires (or antything below H) , then you had a limiter.

The C&C package ties into the limiter thing because that package probably upgraded the tires as well. As for the random thing, maybe the C&C package for 95 did not have the tire package, but the C&C package for 97 did. I think the package offering keeps changing every year because new features and add ons become available as the car line gets older. For example, side airbags became available on 98 Maximas, and standard on 99s, etc.

So, while the C&C package may be a good guide as to whether your maxima has a lmiter or not, if you have the original invoice (I know, highly un-likely), the tires will tell you the real story.

I think it's a combination of weight and ECU (ie. emissions) that make the 95-96's faster than the later 4th Gens. I upgraded my wheels to 16" (300zx rims) and noticed no loss in acceleration, it actually gets up and goes quicker (stickier tires).

I hit 140 on the speedometer a few weeks ago coming over the Dumbarton bridge. I reached it just as I hit the crest of the bridge. I started to go downhill will plenty left (accelerating) in 5th before I shut it down (I was afraid of cops hanging down at the bottom). I don't think I was actually going 140mph, prolly a few mph less for speedometer correction and the ~1% difference in tire size...

96's

I always heard the 96's were the fastest year...im a lot guy at Nissan and I can attest to the fact that for some reason or another whenever i drive a 96 it always feels like it accelerates quicker than a 97 or newer....dont know why...and the 2000's while not actually being quicker feel faster just because of the torque advantage...ahhh ant torque grand.

What in the $^&%&^% is a "C&C" package. And I did say I had a '99 SE Auto which by the way only came with the high performance Toyo. I think Proxas or something like that. I have since changed them out. There's got to be a way to check? How come everyone on this sight has an opinion but no one ever seems to really know?

If you have a 4th gen SE, you dont have a limiter. Ever.

I think you are correct. I can't see to get my 5th gen over 130/131 without the fuel cut kicking in. Have to figur out how to disable that. I was not aware of the fuel cut-off the first time I brought it up to that speed. I thought there was something wrong with the car.

98 SE 5spd

I know you are asking about a 99, but the fastest I ever took my 98 SE 5spd was 180KM/h. There is really no good roads in Toronto to take it any faster, plus I can't afford to have a speeding ticket since I am applying for the force.

Re: Re: Re: RE: Speed Limiter...

Interesting that they put 130/131 limiters on the 5th gen and not the 4th gen, unless its 117 or so for GXEs. I guess Since the 5th gen has a more capable top end than the 4th gen, Nissan had to put the governor there, otherwise it doesn't make sense, since both the 5th and 4th gen come shod with H rated 130 mph tires, at best.

I notice that other manufacturers are governing their cars to 130 as welll, even though they are capable of way more. Example, the Lexus LS 430, Mercedes Benz E 420.

The other reason they are limited to 130 is because of the H Rated Tires.....the stock tires performance rating often determines where the governor is set on a car....H tires arent made to handle more than 130, thus the 130mph speed limiter on the 5th gens....otherwise it would be lawsuit time when someone did 141 and blew a tire.

Good Point. Makes sense to govern the car at the top speed of the manufactures tires. I just installed the Bridgestone Potenza RE730s on my car (225/50ZR16). Amazing tires. What a step up from the Toyo stock tires. Will Nissan remove my speed limiter now?
