What does th wire do that plugs into the side of my oilpan?

I noticed a wire dangling from underneath my car. I got under there and noticed that this wire had come undone on it's own. The plug was full of oil. I cleaned it out as best I could and plugged it back in. Should I take any further steps? TIA

Please take a look at the 4th gen maintenance sticky post, specifically at the post for the "Oil Pressure Sending Unit". If its description matched what you found, consider replacing.
If not, could you be more descriptive?

The wire I am describing plugs in to the side of the oil pan. It is below the oil filter. It's got that little nut right in the middle of it at the bottom. The wire I am referring to has a rubber boot around it and plugs into the side of the oil pan. I am just curious what this wires function is and I wonder why it would just come off.
