I have a "95 GXE with 97k miles. At slow speeds when backing out of driveway, etc, I can hear a slight bumping, thumping noise in the front end. I recently had it checked by a front end mechanic and he could find nothing wrong. He checked the struts, motor mounts, brakes, steering, and other parts and said everything appeared to be tight and in good shape. The noise is not loud and you really don't notice it with the radio on or when you gain speed. Has anyone else experienced this? I have the same general problems as others have indicated on the forum... a little drag when starter is disengaged, starter slow to engage when ignition key is turned on, and that "doggone service" engine light. I have had them all for some time and everything is still working.

The bump might be the strut mount bearings. Does the noise happen when the steering wheel is turned from lock to lock? Car doesn't have to be moving to make it happen. There's an easy fix to that.

The starter problem is fixed with grease. Also an easy job, but you have to remove the starter for that one.

As far as the check engine light goes, you need to get the codes from the ECU. See the sticky post at the top of the forum for info on how thats done. All you need is a flat blade screwdriver.

I'm pretty sure I have the exact same 'front end noise' you're referring to. I regarded it as something insignificant, since when I got my maxi a few mos ago, they looked at the struts and whatnot, and replaced the rear shocks, nothing in the front.

I'll have to try the lock-to-lock test. Strut mount bearing replacement covered in a service manual at all? (I still need to grab one)
