I had 215/60-15 on the stock i-30 rims before I got my 17's. If you buy yourself a good high performance tire in or around that size, you will love the difference in handling. The stock Bridgestones are pathetic. I've heard some guys going as large as 225/55/15 (if you can find them), but after 215mm, the tire becomes too wide for the rim and you start to get a sidewall bend that actually hurts handling and plus the larger sidewall looks kinda cartoonish. A correctly sized high quality performance is better than a larger cheap tire.
