Clunking in steering at slow speeds

I'm pretty sure something in my steering is clunking...I can drive about 5mph...and rock the steering wheel back and fourth...and there is this clunking noise almost like something is hanging and knocking against something else. It happens weither the engine is on or off (rolling down a hill with the engine off rocking the steering back and fourth) Upon visual inspection...I can't find anything loose. My power steering fluid is full and power steering works great....what could this be????

Oh oh....i know i know.

I have it too. You lowered your car right?(even if you didn't it still applies). When whoever changed you struts/springs they left the old "strut bearing plates" in. When you turn these bearings sieze for a sec then let go. Thats why you have the thunking noise. I have had it too for around 2 years. Its funny...i hear it in warm weather and it goes away in the winter. Now that its been below 50 in buffalo it doesn't exist. YES...fixed until april

No, on a serious note, i'm waiting till i have the cash, i need a new cv joint and ball joint too, so i'm gonna do it all at once to save on the labor cost.

A nissan dealer quoted me 350 parts/labor for the bearing plate job...the parts are cheap.

I haven't lowered my car....and it's on the originaly suspension which has never been removed from the car....the sound DEFINTELY isn't a suspension sound...it's in the steering

If there's nothing lose in your suspension then it's most likely your strut bearings. Doesn't matter that you have stock suspension, these parts get old and full of sand and road grit which causes them to fail. Do a search on the forum for STRUT BEARINGS. There's a thread which will point you to a web site which will help explain what this is and how to fix it yourself.
